Well did get some turning done besides bottle stoppers and birdhouses although I can't complain with the money they brought in. Here is a spalted maple bowl that I turned from a chuck of wood I won in a drawing here on SMC from Keith Outten. It looked like it was starting to spalt so I put some really wet chips in a brown grocery sack along with the blank. I kept changing the chips as they dried out. Well finally I pulled it out and decided to give it a go and here is what turned out. It was finished with one coat Seal-A-Cell and 3 coats of Arm-R-Seal then buffed. It is 9 1/2" X 3 3/4". I really liked how it turned out.

Really nice Bernie, that one really shines. Like the rim treatment. Did the finish darken the maple, or was it already somewhat dark?

Thanks for the kind comments. This bowl was a lot of fun and hope Keith will see it. He is the one who donated it for the drawing. I hope I did it justice.

Now we need a tutorial on the finish application. Also, was this turned on your big lathe, or the Jet 1220 VS? :D:D

Thanks again.

Robert it was turned on the Nova. The finish is pretty easy to do with the General Finishes. It is a little time consuming for some but takes about 4 days for the four coats. Then wait a week or so to buff.

Bernie,
I love the simple, uncomplicated bowl designs the best - lets the wood speak. Is this a show piece or will it get use? This is the first I've heard of this finish protocol. It really takes a shine!

Randy the LOML says that is a new popcorn or chip bowl. So yes it will be used. General Finishes is what I use on most of my utility stuff except like plates and soup/cereal bowls which I use Mike Mahoney's walnut oil. I just got a e-mail from him saying that he has not had a problem with allergies with this oil as he said when it dries it becomes inert so no problems. I have not had a complaint on it.

Thanks Jim.

That sure is sharp Bernie. I see quite a few using that finish. Guess I'll have to give it a try.

Thanks Maylon. It is a easy finish to use and I like it a lot. It does take about 4 days to put on the four coats but sure is nice when done.
