A few weeks ago, I made a small plane iron from 52100. I decided to make my first plane from materials that I had on hand. The body is maple and the wedge and wedge pin are hedge. The iron is 1.25 wide and the plane is 5" long.

Enjoy,
Bob

Very nice. A hedge wedge sounds like just the thing.

Sweet nothing like making it yourself, what made you decide to use 52100?
Cheers Ron

Ron,

I had this big old Timkem tapered bearing cup stashed away for years. I was thinking about just throwing it in the trash. 52100 is a tough steel to forge by hand, but it makes a good knife blade. I hadn't foged any 52100 in about 15 years, so I thought I would give it a try.

The iron is about 1/4 inch thick. I think that I lost some carbon, it took some serious surface grinding to get through the skin. Forging the cup into bar and shaping the iron kept the 52100 above critical temp for maybe 40 minutes. After quenching and tempering the skin was not hard. I needed to grind it to get it flat and in the process, the skin went away.

The next iron will be recycled flat automotive leaf spring.

Thanks for the question, I have to say that I do not know beyond all doubt that it is 52100.
