Well I got my grinder setup and built a sharpening jig for it. I used MDF scraps I had just to see if it will work. Plan on redoing it with some 3/4 ply for stability soon.

Also need to work on the end piece to work with sharpening the skew.

I have to say, if there is any new turners reading this, do yourself a HUGE favor and pick up a grinder, mine is a ryobi from the orange store, not a slow speed normal, with stock wheels. The jig took about an hour to make and BOY is there is difference in turning when you have a sharp tool!

Also included a pic of the messy I know lathe, I just love the shavings a sharp tool makes, did two pens in less then 45 mins! :)

Congrats on your new sharpening jig! Judging by all shavings - it works quite well! Sharp tools always amaze you when they cut. With dull tools I am always amazed that I didn't sharpen sooner! When in doubt - sharpen!

Looks like it will do the job and by the looks of the lathe it did work fine.

The proof IS in the shavings. Good job!

Dennis,

Glad it worked out for you!

Yup! There is nothing like turning with sharp tools!
