My new workbench is complete (almost)!!

I have finally completed my entire bench including the world’s largest end vise. I used the Veritas twin screw vise and put the screws 24” on center. The end vise is the entire width of the table.

The table is 72” by 48” and 32 inches high. The frame, supports and banding is all ash. The two vise jaws are hard maple.

The top is 3 layers of 3/4” MDF. I stained it with some poly/stain stuff I had laying around, then put on 4 coats of wipe on ply. Then I waxed it every day for a week.

The green vice is a small cheap one I bought from Hartville Tool utilizing the Woodnet 20% discount. Works great.

The only thing left is to put in some dog holes and I am ready for my blanket chest project.

Yes, I am thinking about a couple of drawer units. I think I can just build a couple of boxes, put in drawers and slide them in on top of the stretchers. I am also going to do that underneath the table on my table saw.

Beautiful job Mark! I like the sturdy/simple look. Very functional and even comfortable looking with the radiused edges. I'm sure you be very cautious with it at first....and then the scratchs will accumulate, a few stains and then it will be like your favorite pair of jeans :), all broken in.

Looks great! I just bought the 24" Veritas twin vise as well and it will arrive on Friday. I'm finishing up some bookshelves and a new workbench is next.

Now, if only I had the time to finish "The Workbench Book"....

Thanks Kent. I already kinda started the breaking in process in that I applied the poly kinda squirrely, so the top is kinda weird already. Oh well, it is just a matter of time anyway.

Thanks, Jim. Yes it is heavy. Took quite an effort to get the top on the frame. Luckily I have a sturdy wife...would have been impossible by myself.
