Chunk of Bradford Pear from a friend of mine. The tree was storm-damaged (taken completely down) and I only got about three halfway decent pieces of any size. The first was a NE bowl that I gave to his wife, and this is the second. This chunk has 5 piths in it that all held together (so far - knock on wood).

It's about 7" wide and about 5" tall. Sanded thru 600, one thin coat of gel poly and buffed.

Nice job of turning. Good finish while keeping the natural edge on a hollow form. Good figure in the wood.

Lovely NE HF there, Mark! I like the form and the way it shows off the grain. I'm a fan of pithy crotch patterns.

Travis is really the one who got me to "thinking piths" with his "Katrinas". I've tried it with Bradford Pear (and also Black Cherry) and had excellent results. The piths seem to almost all hold together. If one opens up any I just drop a little thin CA in it.

Beautiful bowl. Couldn't help noticing how nice the finish is on the inside. How does one do that? (I assume you don't stick much of your hand in there when the thing is spinning.)

Joe, it's sanded thru 600 grit on the inside and then the finish is applied and rubbed out by hand. The hole is big enough I can get two/three fingers in there and can reach the bottom that way.

Thanks for all the comments!
