Form Practice: Weed Pot

In between pens and bottle stoppers, I turned this little weed pot for LOML out of some scrap walnut. I did it mostly for some form practice. Turned between centers, then I used forstner bits to bore the hole and get the spur center marks off the bottom. It was sanded to 1200 grit and finished with just a couple quick coats of wipe-on poly and some Johnson paste wax. Try as I might, I couldn't get a photo without some glare.

Vaughn great job. I like the simple form and of course the walnut. That is my favorite turning wood. Looks mighty fine to me. I am sure the wife will like it.

It's nice as it is. That said, for your next one, try making the top/rim end smaller and the bottom end larger, but with a smaller "foot" if you choose to have one. It will feel a little lighter, yet more stable, than the current version.

A good way to experiment with forms like this is to take scrap and do a few of them without hollowing. Smooth them off and paint them flat black. Put them on a shelf where you can stand back and view them in contemplation. Pick the one you like the best and do three more with that form, but with refinements. Etc., until you get the form that is most pleasing, balanced and in line with your project intention. (These can be smaller than your intended final turning if you choose)
