Hi All,

I'm trying to match my kitchen cabinets which have a "cherry finish". It has a fair amount of red color in it. The stain I got just seems to be brown even though it was supposed to be the stain used. How would you increase the red tone in a stain? Thanks.

Is the wood under the "Cherry Finish" cherry or what. Sometimes the color of a stain depends quite a lot on what wood it is on. Of course if the cabinets are of cherry wood, they are undoubtedly on the same color now as when they were new, so you could be shooting at a moving target.

You can generally mix stains of different shade within a particular brand.

Take a door or drawer front to Sherwin Williams or other "pro" paint store and have them help you come up with a match. That's exactly what happened today here when my floor guys needed to get a color for the new yellow pine floors in our addition that is compatible with the existing pumpkin pine floors as well as the sample I prepared using dyes in my shop. They nailed it...after about two hours of hard work.

Take a sample of the wood it will be on up to the point of stain. Also remember that finish changes the color somewhat.

Remember remember that cherry changes and if it is cherry and you match it now that doesn't guarantee it will still be matched in a year or so.

I think that is all the remembers for now.

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that the kitchen wood is birch. But I'm staining aspen that I got at Lowes. It's a very light colored tight grained wood; it looks beautiful. Those are some great ideas you guys have given me to work with. Thanks again.
