Now that I have completed my FPP pledge to donate $1200 in 2004, I'd like to make a new pledge. For this one, I am going to need your help. But first I would like to tell you a story.

My father was a Marine. He spent two years serving in Korea in Force Recon. The remainder of his career he spent as a Marine Drill Instructor. You can well imagine that when I was growing up as a young man I did not care for my father's strict rules and discipline. When I left home to make my place in the world my father and I grew ever more distant. It was only later in life that I began to rebuild my relationship with him. Sadly, he died before I had completed this task. One of the things that I most deeply regret was never telling him about the respect I had for him as a veteran. He served with honor in a world sometimes not so honorable.

I believe our veterans, as well as those "veterans in the making" who are now serving all over the world, deserve three things:

1) Our respect for serving with honor.
2) Our admiration for the sacrifices they made and are making in the performance of their duties.
3) Our support.

That is what the Freedom Pens Project is all about. Letting individual men and women serving in the Armed Forces know that we appreciate them, that we are thinking about them, and that we support them. So, here is the deal. I will donate $10 each to the FPP for any veteran who is a member of SMC and responds to this thread with your service branch and years of service, up to a $1000 limit. If you don't want to publically disclose that information you can PM me. Please be assured that this is in no way a political statement, it is merely my way of recognizing my SMC brethren for their service.

Waymon,

That is very generous of you.

Currently: LCDR, USNR, Individual Ready Reserve

Previously: Active Duty: 1986-1995

I served with Air Antisubmarine Squadron Twenty-Two (VS-22) on board the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) during what I guess is now called the "first" Gulf War in 1990-91. The Kennedy was part of "Battleforce Red Sea", which consisted of 3 aircraft carriers and their support ships. Prior to the beginning of hostilities, our job was to enforce the blockade of Iraq by monitoring all shipping in the Red Sea. During the liberation of Kuwait, the S-3's continued the blockade, conducted combat tanking missions, and ferried the air plan from Riyadh to the carriers. We were gone for 7 and a half months on 5 days notice.

125 traps, 43 at night.

Thanks Waymon that's great of you. I served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969. In Nam I was attached to the 75th transportation group and performed flight line support of mostly navigation equipment on Huey helicopters. I was there during the Tet offensive in 1968 when all h___ broke out.

Thank you Waymon. That's a very generous offer.

I've been a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy for 18 years now. I spent the first 6 years of my career with the Marines (as a field corpsman), did a 2 year stint with the military's medical examiners and then went into the submarine service (as an independent duty corpsman). I'm currently on my 3rd submarine.

Again, thank you for your contribution and to all you past veterans, THANK YOU too for your service.

Waymon,

Very generous, indeed. Your father would be proud! I'm sure...I served in the USN from Nov. 68 - Nov. 76.......my oldest son served in the Army for 9 years.......my youngest son just got out of the navy in August 2003 after 5 years........my father was a Chief Boatswain Mate.......my youngest son was the most immature 26 year old man I'd ever seen following his graduation (& my paying for) from college.....16 weeks under a U.S. Marine Drill Gunnery Sergeant did wonders for his attitude! I'll never forget parking the car on the old seaplane parking area at Pensacola. We walked a block when he saw us.......He kissed his Mom....he hugged me..he stepped back.....he said "Dad...I never realized how much you and Mom did for me!".......That evening at the Mom and Pop function.....my wife was giving that Marine drill instructor both barrels for not letting her son call home more often.......I was buying him a drink thanking him for what he'd done! As a parent, I'd bet your father would just appeciate your appreciation for what he did.....In my opinion that's all a parent can expect......just respect and appreciation for what you've done for your child.

Again....you are extremely generous!

I do believe we must have. I was AirborneWeapons Tech on the AC-130H models. Flew on them at Korat for almost two years and helped them close the doors in '75. The year before that I was in Ubon doing the same thing (which puts me there about the same time as you).

The year before that I was stationed at Nakapanam [sic?] on different aircraft.

Never saw this post before today. Thanks Waymon for starting it and thanks Keith for bringing it to the fore.

US Army quartermaster corp. 1966-1968. Nam 66-67. Not nearly as glamorous as some of the others here, I was part of the largest supply base in Nam just outside Saigon. We made sure the rest of the guys had fuel, food, clothing and any other equipment that might be needed to do their jobs.

I don't even think it matters who did what. We were all part of a "TEAM".

Thanks to all who have served and taken the time to post. And thanks to those of you who didn't, couldn't or whatever for at least thinking about those who serve now or have served in the past.

Hi Waymon I don't know if you are counting family members or not, but I got 2 for you. My father is a Vietnam Veteran and my older brother served 5 years as an MP in 2 different American Embassies, both of them are Marines.

I am ashamed to say that I never served our beautiful country, but I am proud to say that my father and brother did. To me that is one of the greatest honors in the world. I do however plan on serving our country in a different way, but I wont talk about that until the time comes.

14 months in Vietnam 1970-1971

I was drafted right after college, went to Infantry OCS at the Benning School for Boys, but received a commission in the Signal Corps (probably saved my life). Had some US duty but it was so boring that I volunteered for duty in Vietnam. For me, Vietnam duty was not bad - it was better than duty in the United States. We worked long hours and six days per week but as long as you did your job, nobody messed with you.

I met my wife in Vietnam. She was a civilian working for Control Data on a computer contract. I always tell people that we met during a mortar attack when I jumped into a fox hole and fell on her, but the truth is much less prosaic - we met in the office.

Vietnam had a major impact on me - like many others of my generation, it was the defining event of my life. It expanded my view of the world and of the people in it. I loved the Orient: the food, the culture, the crazy traffic, the dirty streets. To this day, I have a strong affinity for the Orient.

I have so many stories about that time - my friends have gotten tired of hearing them. One of the great things about our marriage is that my wife and I share many of the same stories.

Waymon,

Thanks for your service to our great nation.

As the title if the message states I am retired from the US Navy. 25 and a half of the best years of my life were spent serving. No regrets, but plenty of "I wish I had".

I enlisted in August 1971 and retired in April 2000. I was an Aviation Electrician (AE) and retired as a Senior Chief (AECS). Most of my career was spent in the Pacific Northwest. I deployed on aircraft carriers 3 times, and spent a tour on Instructor Duty in Memphis.

To all who have posted here: Thank you! You all have my deepest respect and admiration. It truly is an honor to have read each of your posts.

For those of you on this thread, I thank you. For those of you who actually went in harm's way, and even bigger thank you. Not that those who served in the rear, like me, served any smaller purpose. Just that I am not sure how well I would have performed listening to ordinance pass that close to me and, well, just THANK YOU for being there and getting the job done!

My father was a 25yr vet that served with honor in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam, receiving 2 Silver Stars w/valor, 3 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts among other decorations. While I was growing up, he was my hero and still is to this day. I would never have known about his achievements had my sister not visited our grandmother who gave them to my sister. Hubby did 28 years in the Navy (1965 - 1993) and retired as an ATCS. He served in VP-5 at Jacksonville; NAS Pax River, Maryland; Souda Bay, Crete; NSA Naples; USS Nimitz; BuPers DC; USS Saipan; VF-84; and other points in between. He's a 45-plus-year woodworker, and turned me into one about 23 years ago. I don't know if this counts, but I worked with the Navy at NavSta Norfolk and NAS Pax River from 1966-1971 as a civilian disbursing clerk. (First husband was also Navy--retired as AVCM with 20 years.)

Also had multiple uncles on both sides of the family in WWII and Korea; lost family members in VietNam.

Anchors Aweigh!!!!!

What a great thing you are doing, Waymon. Thank you.

Firstly, THANK YOU, for all who have and all who are serving our country in the armed services. My time in was from 1983 to 1987 as a United States Marine, helicopter mech.(CH-53e's), quality inspector, crew chief, areial gunner. Traveled numorous places in the states and across the big pond. One month+ on the USS IWO JIMA LPH-2 and seven+ months on the USS SAIPAN LHA-2. Was not all ways fun but all ways worth it. In hind sight I should have stayed in longer.

Looking forward on the flight deck of the USS SAIPAN

My wife experessed an interest in turning pens so I swapped some wood blanks (I have a sawmill) to a guy for his Delta Midi. He stepped up to a bigger lathe.

We do not have it set up yet because life keeps getting in the way, don't even have any turning tools yet but hopefully will soon and will dive into this Freedom Pen effort and see what it is all about.

Love this site have been reading archives off and on for months.

USA 1969-72, Vietnam-Cobra gunships out of Pleiku, Guard 72-75, Active Reserves 76-84 while flying in Africa. Active Guard 85 to present flying C-12 airplanes. If I make it to April 2009, my new MRD at 62, that will make 40yrs active and reserve. (We must be short of pilots if they are letting us 60yr olds make tactical night approaches into Bagdad.)
