I put a thread on the turners forum about making a request to Grizzly to make available a bed extension and toolrest assembly for the G0766. Those who have ordered the 0766 should take a look at my post, then reply if you would like to.

Grizzly is taking this request under advisement. The request was sent up the chain of command to the decision makers, but it will likely be sometime before we know what decision is made........perhaps it will show up on their website as an accessory for the G0766?

    Roger,

It looks to me like the 766 is lacking the machined boss to have a flat surface to bolt a bed level extension to. Mounting down at the bolt holes on the legs wouldn't be hard but I would think that many extension purchases are to extend the bed for longer spindle turnings. My guess is that they will change the bed to accept a true extension before marketing one.

On the other hand, there are those bolt holes on the legs. Perhaps an extension is already made that would bolt there. Seems like there should be some handy use for them.

I think you are correct, Hu........those holes are there for some reason! I would want if for turning off the end, but with a lathe that is already 42 inches between centers, adding an 18" extension would put it at 60" between centers. Plenty for bed posts or maybe a two part porch column?

    Roger,

I like the option to turn walking staffs. My extension I used on my old lathe is very crude but it did get the job done. I would like the option to turn a 60-72 inch shaft sometimes. Of course the 766 and something like I use now will work. Just something to hold a center to use as a tail stock, I swap the wood end to end and just mount my tool rest in the original bed.

Shouldn't be hard to adapt an extension to those lower bolt holes and I guess any brand of banjo will work. I don't know if I need that much though. Thinking about a fixture to mount some type of saw to cut my blanks round mounted in the headstock and hanging over the end of the lathe, probably my use for those holes. Don't know, just thinking. A round 20-21 inch blank would seem pretty big for awhile!

When I see the real lathe, I think I can design a swing away extension to let the tailstock get out of the way for bowls and platters. I just saw the Robust roll away extension with gas cylinder assists. Sweet. My oldest son can make just about anything, so this may be an option too.

I see the last comment was June, 2015. I am counting down to 4 months away to buy the G0766.

    Three questions:

How bothersome is the electronic noise?
Is there a solution yet for the low extension?
Do you add a platform for storage and/or weight to lower the center of gravity?

    Thank you very much.

    Brian, here are my opinions:
    1. Electrical noise - - if you are talking about accoustic noise from the inverter or motor, I would say that it is not objectionable. If you are talking about radiated or conducted radio frequency energy (i.e., electrical noise) it does not seem objectionable in my shop - - that is, it doesn't interfere with my radio.
    2. Low Extension - - no I haven't heard of any solution. I recall looking on the contract manufacturer's site (Burt Group) and I believe that I saw an extension that they make. But Grizzly apparently has not chosen to import it. Take a look at the Wyoming Woodturner video on a home made off-board rest. I don't like that it is freestanding, but think that it would be better attached to the lathe using the existing bolt holes.
3.Platform? Yes, good idea. I used a pair of 2 x 10's IIRC and a few hundred pounds of sand. Not elegant but helps.

Brian, my G0766 is pretty quiet. You can hear it, especially if you lean toward the motor/inverter when it runs.........more so on high speed than medium or slow speed. Now context is important....to me it is not any louder than most 3520b's I have turned on or been around. It is 3 hp motor, and the fan on the motor at high speeds is what you hear the most, but the inverter makes a low chirping sound, but it is just the way it is all programmed for the motor/inverter combination. Most 3520b's are 2 hp, so you are gaining in hp and that "M" series Delta Electronics inverter is made for 3 phase motors 2 hp to 7.5 hp, so you have a "sensorless Vector micro drive inverter" which is the best kind available for a lathe application. I have not heard of any failures with the inverter on the 0766, but that is not to say that there are not some inverters made in the USA that might be way more expensive, and perhaps a bit better...who knows!

I did put a shelf on the leg castings.......2- 2x10's and because of the need for room in my tiny shop, I have wood blanks on my shelf, but would love to have put sand bags on it.
