I already posted an intro on the older thread. So did many others, I believe.
Hi all, joined the group a few days ago. Just getting into turning and have been learning on an old Craftsman tube which was my Dad's. I've been working around that lathe for twenty years or more and finally said last fall I either need to learn how to use it, or I need to get rid of it. Floor space in my shop is a premium since I have many other woodworking toys. I finally smoked the motor on the old Craftsman the other day and decided to replace rather than repair. I ordered a Grizzly G0766 last Friday and it was supposed to ship today so I'm anxiously waiting for notification that it is on the way. Thank you Roger for all the information you have provided on various sites. I am a retired civil engineer/business owner, live in Vermont and have been woodworking for many years. When I'm not in the shop, I also enjoy homebrewing.
Welcome to the GGMG, Gary. There is a lot of knowledge in this group, so if you need any help with anything, don't hesitate to ask! Going from a craftsman tube lathe to the G0766 is like going from T-ball to the major leagues in one step. You will see such a difference! Post a couple of pics when you get set up!
Use the speed knob to turn the rpm's down on your 0766 before turning it off, especially with a large piece of wood on it....that will keep you from overriding the braking as the large heavy pieces could try to freewheel from the inertia, and trip the breaker on the inverter, requiring a reset.

Greetings. I've posted a couple of times, so I'm not 100% new. I don't have a Grizzly lathe right now, but I'm seriously considering one. I currently have a General International VS+ which has a 12" swing, but isn't very heavy or sturdy. It's quite nice for smaller boxes and bowls, but I'd like to experiment with turning some larger chunks of stuff including some off centered experiments. Time is a bit limited, because I work full time and my other interests include competitive sailboat racing (yes, in Colorado) and the, apparently, never ending house remodeling project. Regards Doug
Hey Doug....thanks for chiming in.....much appreciated. Good luck with that remodeling thing. I know from personal experience that it can take over your life......for a while at least. If you decide to go big, that new G0800 is a real feature packed lathe, that looks as good as anything coming out of Asia [Tiawan]. I like my G0766 also.
