I'm looking to purchase a larger lathe and have done a lot of reading for several years now. From a value perspective, I would like to purchase a Grizzly lathe. Does anyone have any opinions on the G0733 vs G0766? I find it interesting that G0733 is more expensive. It does have a longer bed but fewer indexing positions and the headstock rotates, does the G0766 headstock rotate? Why would someone choose the G0733 over the G0766?

    Any opinions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jim K.

the headstock on the 733 and 766 do not rotate, but may be slid done the length of the bed. The 632 has a rotating headstock

I think that there is more value in the G0766. I am still surprised that they charge more for the G0733. It doesn't really make a lot of sense. I think that there were a few very minor improvements made in the G0766 over its predecessor. The motor is more powerful on the G0766. They are both good lathes, but I recommend buying the G0766 rather than the G0733.

The headstock can be turned 180 degrees if needed for whatever reason, which is just to say it can be lifted off the bed ways, and turned the opposite direction. The G0766 is the best value, and has a handwheel, where the g0733 does not, and you have 3 hp on the 0766, and a 2 hp motor on the 0733, plus 4 more inches of swing.

I called Grizzly with the same question when I was considering a purchase and they couldn't come up with any answers. I went for the 7066 and I can't imagine why anyone would pay more for the 7033

Jim, I have both the G0733 and the G0766. Both are excellent lathes. The advantage of the G0733 is the additional working length for spindle turning. If you don't need that, I think there's more bang for your buck with the G0766 right now, given current pricing.

I've had the G0766 for almost a year, and turned a lot of bowls and vases with it . I too looked at the forums, written artiicles etc. Decided to buy the G0766 and I've never been sorry. It comes down to making a choice on what you like and want.
