Tailstock replacement?

“I have a Grizzly G0462 clone and the tailstock mechanism is totally ruined. The groove for my set screw is blown out, so I can't advance the quill for drilling. Now I'm looking for a solution and would appreciate any advice you fellows might have. I have contacted Grizzly to find out if they can supply me with a new handwheel, but I'd rather spend my money on a better quality tailstock. What do you think? Kim

Kim.......I am not sure that you will be able to find a better tailstock for your lathe. Just vaguely in my memory, I think your clone is the same as the shop Fox W1758, which is Grizzly's retail line, so you are likely limited to this line of lathes. The Grizzly G0632 is a clone of the Jet 1642 evs and has a 16" swing as well, but I am not sure of the gap between the ways and the way the underside of the tailstock is machined. You might have to stick with a replacement on the G0462 model.........just have to check with Grizzly tech support.

Kim, is the Mexican vendor of your lathe not able to order parts for you? You say you've contacted Grizzly to see if they can supply you with a new handwheel. Do you want to replace just the damaged parts if Grizzly parts will fit, or the entire tailstock? If yours is a true replica of the Grizzly G0462, I agree with Roger that it's unlikely you'll find a tailstock any better than what's available through Grizzly that would fit your lathe.

From the Grizzly web page for their G0462, I see they list an entire "Tailstock Assembly" for $126.50. I would think that probably includes the handwheel. I also see that, for several of the individual tailstock components, they list a version 1 and a version 2. Maybe Grizzly tech support would be willing to help determine if what you have is the equivalent of version 1, and whether version 2 would be an upgrade. Either way, replacing just the damaged parts strikes me as the way to go.

Thanks, Roger and David. Yes, I did end up contacting the Mexican vendor. They will order a new handwheel for me, which could take months. The problem is the left shoulder for the groove for the setscrew is stripped out. It so happens my good neighbor is a retired tool and die maker. He will fix my handwheel on a metal lathe and then weld a ring onto it. And then I'm going to have figure out how I ended up damaging the groove in the first place so it won't happen again.

Glad to hear you have a fix in the works, Kim! Good luck with it!
