Hello Group! I live in Fredericksburg. I bought our house about 13 years ago with a really nice detached shop, and I've been slowing filling it up to where it's pretty well equipped. I just started turning this past month. I needed to make a project which required a turned part, so naturally a tool purchase was required. I went extreme low-end on this one, since I didn't know if it would turn out or if I would like turning. Basically the Harbor Freight 3/4HP variable speed. 20% off, out the door for like 250. Borrowed a set of tools and went to work. Got asked to do some replacement spindles for a broken chair a couple weeks ago, so I needed a chuck of some sort. Got the Barracuda set for 130. Real nice. I'm set up to do almost any kind of smallish turnings. Thinking about taking some classes or something at Woodcrafters in Richmond. I was in the Marine Corps for a bit over 23 years, combination of active duty and Reserve. Now I have an extra weekend every month. Nice!
Welcome Hunter, I'm familier with your area, I used to live in Spotsylvania County near Lake Anna many years ago. If you fall into the Turning vortex you will soon be spending more of your time and income The list of Virginia Woodworkers here is growing, we probably have a large enough group to try and schedule a gathering at least once per year. I will try to get a list of names and send out some invitations. .
