Mexican Grizzly

I just discovered that the lathe I bought here in Mexico where I live is a Grizzly G 0462. I just set it up and can't figure out how to apply pressure with the tailstock. The tailstock is firmly locked but when I turn the quill handwheel to push the live center into the workpiece it simply doesn't get a good, deep grip and when roughing out a square blank, the blank spins. I'd appreciate your suggestions.

Kim, I don't have that lathe, but it sounds like the set screw of the tail stock handwheel may not be seated and tightened properly on the lead screw. I suspect there is a flat on the lead screw shaft that the handle's set screw should tighten onto. The tail stock mechanisms aren't complicated, so if you poke around a bit, you will probably be able to see what's wrong. NB: If you want to remove the quill, be sure you first unscrew and remove the quill lock handle.

Let us know what you find.

I'm curious why you believe your lathe is a Grizzly, rather than a look-alike from one of the same factories in Shandong? I've never heard that Grizzly rebrands its products for sale in Mexico.

Thank you, David. I can now get the pressure I need for tightening a blank between centers by playing around with the set screw. I didn't see anything in the manual about that. I guess you're right. I shouldn't have called my machine a Mexican Grizzly. It's just everything is exactly the same as the Griz 462. I will need to shim the tailstock to get decent alignment between the live center and the drive center. I'm thinking about epoxying leaf gauges under the tailstock.

Interesting! I think David pretty much gave you the correct info.........there are many clones to lathes manufactured as well as other wood working machines. The manufacturer gets contracted to make lathes and other machines to certain specs and labels for each company. This no doubt is the same machine as the G0462 .....rpm is likely 600 on the low end which why you need to be very careful about putting a bowl blank that is unbalanced on it .....your lathe might just begin walking across the floor!

Welcome to the group, Kim. Before you epoxy shims under the tail stock, you might consider adjusting the leg levelers to see if you can get the centers to align. Good luck. I would bolt it to the floor once I had it dialed in, but I know there are differing opinions on that. It can put additional stress on the cast iron parts.
