This is just an idea that I am going to use and modify to suit my needs when my new G0766 arrives. Thanks to Greg Just for his inspiration! I will use casters on the bottom and be able to move mine in and out for cleaning up purposes, and the casters will give me enough toe room to stand close to the lathe without having to strain my back.

I am not fully decided on this yet, but I may also make some vertical ballast boxes and attach to the leg castings on the outside so as to leave the underneath area for the cabinet and yet be able to put some ballast on the stand........fill with bags of play sand or something.......should make for a rock solid platform to do larger work.

Though members of the group might find this info helpful

Not sure I would like that setup unless it was set back further, seems like it would be in the way. Although, if you are tight on space it wouldn't be a bad choice.

I was thinking of building a rolling cabinet about the height of the bed, still working out G0766 lathe location in the shop too.

I've got several hundred pounds of lead shot for ballast if need be, use to do a bit of reloading. Could bolt it down to the concrete through the floor.

James.........take a second look at my post........not just the pic.......I mention casters on the bottom to roll it back underneath and towards the wall in back of my lathe......no interference with my stance.........I need the rolling ability to be able to clean up shavings, etc.!

I guess I'm just not a fan of tool storage under work areas. Yes, casters would be helpful in your case, I was half asleep I guess. Not sure how that works if you need ballast.

No problem James! Concerning ballast on the lathe........if you will notice, I mentioned two vertical ballast boxes attached to either end of the legs, & filled with sand or something to add weight.

Asleep at the wheel again, lol. Sounds like you've thought it all out!

James, I don't reload shot shells myself, but several of my buddies do. Have you checked the price of lead shot lately? You might want to reconsider choice of ballast.

Ya, I know David, it was much higher a few years ago, this is nickle plated too. I already have it and got a sweet deal at the time I bought it and I'm unlikely to ever use it, plus it takes up far less room than sand or other typical ballast. Boat yards often have lead ballast available if you need some.

Last weekend I nearly completed the under storage cabinet for my G0766. Like the dummy I am, I already disposed of the crate bottom (feeling the riser would be troublesome to remove), so I had to purchase 1/2" plywood for the bottom and doors. I made my cabinet 52" long x 20" high x 20" deep, and used casters from a $8 HF moving dolly. I have visions of a full extension drawer (36" wide x 18" deep x 6" high), and got the slides ($12 at HD), but my cabinet making skills or non-existent, so I may opt out. I'll post pics here or in the main turner's forum. I did get my now 11 year old to help me drill and screw the piano hinged doors in place (always a good thing to involve him in handiwork). I kept it independent of the Lathe so I can move it back out of the way for cleaning and knee room.
