So I just checked my spindle and the threads are undersized and I can not get a 3/8" rod through the hole. I called Grizzly and the guy I talked to said that he nor his supervisor know anything about the problem and that they were not replacing the splindles. Di I get a hold of the wrong people or is there a secret code?
Cary - I emailed customer service on Monday Aug 1, and explained the problems I was having with my spindle. They emailed back, saying sorry to hear about my problem and that the part would be shipped right out. I should get it tomorrow, Friday Aug. 5. I will post what the diameter of the threads on new spindle are and if a 3/8 rod will pass thru.
I guess I am one of the lucky ones so far. My first spindle will allow hollow lamp threaded rod to pass through with no issues, and the threads were adequate. I did have to file off the shoulder to allow my Nova G3 chuck to face off properly. Replacement parts were called in (speed pot, touch up paint) or emailed for (spindle) and came free of charge with no hassles. Maybe you're not holding your tongue right? , as they say here in Nashville.
replacement pot and spindle arrived this afternoon. Alas, spindle thread diameter is 1.217, the old one is 1.221; so no improvement there. But there is less wobble when faceplates or chucks are screwed on, and they screwed on all the way to the base - no filing required this time. A 3/8 rod passes thru.
Well after sending an e-mail to CS yesterday, I got a response today that a spindle is on the way.
Steve, you got an undersized spindle. The "thread diameter" is probably okay, but for some reason the machinist decided to remove material on the major OD that should have been left. I think that you got some of their old/existing stock and not from the newest batch. If you bought a $1 bolt from Home Depot, it would undoubtedly meet "class 2" specs (which are easy-peasy to meet). But your new spindle appears to be of lower quality and doesn't even meet those specs (which accounts for 90% of threaded fasteners. I suggest that you call Griz and ask for a better spindle. BTW, I do metal work and cut threads on my metal lathe. There is little excuse for manufacturing spindles like the one you got. (That is my personal opinion). Try to drop a 3/8" drill bit through. If it gets stuck, then it doesn't meet Griz's spec of 0.394". Reason to send back.
