Greetings everyone - Two years ago I became intrigued with woodturning by watching videos on Youtube. After a couple of weeks of watching I decided I'd like to give it a try so I purchased a Harbor Freight 12" lathe with a 25% off coupon and a set of HF tools. I can remember the first curl of wood that came off the gouge and I was hooked! I mean hooked. Six months later I knew I wanted something more substantial so I researched. Did side by side comparisons of a number of units and found that without question the greatest bang for the buck was (and is) the G0766. It has been a workhorse for the last 18 months and am very happy with it overall.

Continued do to the 1000 character limit . . .

My only issue with it was the limited choices you have with tool rests. The 25mm kills just about everything you would like to buy out there. So I started doing research and I came across Rogers thread regarding the Oneway banjo. This led me to Roger and an email asking how he liked the Oneway banjo 2 years in. Roger did 2 things for me; he guided me on what to do with the Grizz banjo and he turned me onto this group! Which will save me spending $$ on a new banjo that I can now spend on Robust tool rests ( that my wife just bought me for Christmas).

I am quite thankful for finding Roger and this group. The 0766 is a great lathe.

Hi all! I'm Derek. I'm brand new to turning and have only turned some pivot posts to fix some broken furniture and helped make a couple "magic wands" with my daughters on the G0766. Needless to say the hook has been set and I've spent the weekend thus far learning about all the other accessories I now need beyond my one Easy Wood rougher: Hurricane chucks, McNaughton (although the Woodcut might be easier for a total newbie), etc.. I'll post a pic of the wands for everyone's amusement tomorrow. Thank you for all the great info!

    Hello all

I've already posted a few times but I just found this thread so figured I'd better introduce myself.

I'm located in an area called Forgottonia in Illinois. That doesnt really mean much just an interesting fact I didnt know until a couple of years ago.

I havent turned anything since high school and I really need to stay away from you tube because thats what got me thinking about getting a lathe after watching a lot of turning videos on there. They make it look easy right? How hard can it be? lol

So, lathe is on order (G0766) and I'm going to move my shop out of the unheated garage into kind of an old family room of the house.

The only thing I have to answer to is two boxer dogs so its pretty much anything goes around here.

Today as part of the process of getting new shop ready I disassembled an old upright piano because it was sitting where the lathe is going to go. A guy from Peoria wanted $300 to remove and dispose of the piano, me being cheap I decided to do it myself. Now I'm thinking maybe the price wasnt too bad! lol.

I'm sure you will get tired of my questions but I hope not.

Hello all. My present lathe is a Nove 2024 which I have put to the test with 50 and 60lb blanks. It has done well but more mass (weight) would be a big help. So I am strongly considering the G0766 and wanted to see what the experience is with those that have them. Also would like to ring a G0766 owner in the Tampa Bay Area tomvisit with.

Welcome to the GGMG, John. I hope you can find a G0766 owner near you. I think the performance of the G0766 is certainly comparable to the Powermatic 3520b. Only more horsepower and distance between centers.
