Bolt Length

I have moved to a new home with a nicer shop. The head stock and the tail stock neither would simply slide off. Is this a safety feature or are the bolts too long? (Idid notice this when I assembled the lathe) Can I shorten them without causing myself issues? They seem less than too .125 long.
    Thanks

That bolt length is a safety feature to keep from sliding off the end and dropping to the floor [which would be disasterous!]. If you want to remove either headstock or tailstock, unscrew the safety bolt.

Even with the safety bolt removed I have to remove the nut and the wedge to slide it off. I've used it a year this way it can stay as is.
    Thanks!

yes tom you can grind down the locking bolt to get the tail stock to slide off the end of the lathe. that was one of my first mods. if you do this just have to nut on the bolt so when you get done you can back the nut off and dress any problems the threads you do not have to take much off but if you do this make sure you always reinstall the safety bolt in the end of the ways so the tail stock does not get pushed off by accident
