Grizzly G0766 newbie

Hey guys. I joined a few weeks back because I was considering buying my first lathe. I'm a hobbyist woodworker but I've never turned on a lathe before. It looked to me like the best deal was on the G0766 since I wouldn't need to upgrade in the future when I wanted to do bigger items. Any tips for a new lathe owner or new G0766 owner? I've seen discussions about the spindle boss and odd sized banjo hole and will address those after I get some basic turning under my belt.

Lots of help here Dusty, when you are ready for it. Welcome to the GGMG! You went big to begin with and the G0766 will allow you to skip upgrading many times!

Yes over the last couple years I have bought several tools that would be considered beginner tools only to upgrade them soon thereafter. Of course during the upgrade process I always lost money on the beginner tools and I got tired of that! New approach is to buy something I know will last a lifetime of hobby use.

Id recommend addressing the banjo hole sooner rather than later. I didn't for awhile and your really limited to what you can turn with the stock 14" tool rest, particularly if you get into any small turning.

So I bought a smaller 3" faceplate and it looks like it's time to file down the spindle. Any tips on doing this? I just ran it with a not very aggressive triangle file at 600 rpm for probably 3 or 4 minutes and it's still not going on. Does this sound right?

The diameter of the oversized shoulder is 1.260". Your faceplate I.D. should be 1.250 or perhaps even bigger. So, you are only taking off 0.005 (five thou) all the way around.

Some people think that they just press the fiile against the rotating part. But you need to stroke it in the direction opposite the rotation of the running spindle. It's hard to say why it is going slow for you. Perhaps the file is loaded up or just plain dull. If you have a "grub screw" on the faceplate, make sure that it is backed out.

BTW, your original Griz. faceplate should fit without any mods.

When filing something it always makes it easier if you are using a caliper or micrometer so that you can observe your intermediate progress.

Thanks for the information Brice. I'm thinking my problem is the file I was using. It's a very fine file and this evening I will give it another go with a more aggressive file, watching my progress with a caliper.

My original grizzly 6" faceplate does indeed fit just fine. However I purchased a smaller 3" Easy Wood tools faceplate and when it bottoms out on the spindle there is still at least an 1/8" gap.

I'm not sure exactly what has happened but after using the lathe for a couple weeks the threads on the spindle have started messing up. I noticed when I received the lathe I thought the 6" faceplate was a little difficult to get on (set screws are back out) but I didn't pay much attention to because of the excitement of having it. Now there is a considerable difference when taking it on or off.

Talked to grizzly today and they are sending me a new spindle. Is this a very difficult replacement? I've noticed in some older threads that people had some issues with their spindles and had to replace them.

Dusty, they have a .pdf document that they can email to you that shows the steps, and has some pics of the process, but you need to call tech and specifically request it.....it is especially for the G0766.
