I read your problem with some interest, I've dealt with the same one. I use a fine diamond hone on the side that 'pulls' on my Tenon saw (20 tpi).

I hone from the outside of the set, toward the middle of the plate to smooth off any burr I may leave when sharpening.

I also make parallel lines for ripping, so I can 'steer'.

EZE lap makes the little flat hones I use.
    They seem to last.
  2. Bruce, I'm not aware of any groups around here. Creek member Mark Stutz also lives in Vincennes and we talk occasionally at the Vincennes Rendezvous on Memorial Day weekend. You should come up to the event and introduce yourself. I'll be demo'ing Windsor chair construction and will have my spring pole lathe there.

I’m from Evansville and I noticed that you are from Vincennes. Is there a group of hand tool woodworkers that get together in the area? I would love to talk about neander stuff with other guys who share my interest. Not finding a lot of those at Woodcraft and Lowes
