Hey Zach, I recently read your post about preferring tang firmer chisels over bevel edge chisels. All I have is cheap hardware store chisels and I would like to get some nicer bench chisel. I live close to Highland and so I've been able to see the LN bevel edge chisels up close and i really like them. I guess I'm wondering what the advantage a firmer chisel has over a bevel edge chisel. The firmer chisels are hard to find, I know that narex has a set of 4 on Amazon, I could also buy vintage if I could find the right sizes. I have money to spend and it seems the LNs would be good all around chisels. Am I missing something by not having firmer chisels? Thanks!

    Zach,
I am about 25 miles North of Mount Pleasant and 7 miles from Clare in a town called Farwell. The town that was famous for a couple of music concerts before the promoter went belly up.
Like Mike wrote, I am jealous of your close proximity to Johnson Lumber. Never been there but have heard great stories. My kitchen cabinets were made from wood from Johnson.
If you look at my posts you will find that I am not much of a woodworker, more a jack of all trades and mostly hobby things. I spend most of my time on the Off Topics area.
I had forgotten about the Michigan Woodworkers site. I joined just after it started but there was such little activity on it my memory faded.

    Zach,
You are near Johnson lumber are you not? I am jealous, had the chance to stop by several times when traveling for business. neat place.

As regards to the furniture I build, it is mostly queen anne. I have an album up of my spice boxes that I made as Christmas gifts this last year. Currently working on a reproduction of a lowboy I saw at the DeWitt Wallace museum in Colonial Williamsburg. Still drawing up the carving which is what really attracted me to the piece, I have most of the mahogany I need, I think. Need to really measure out the 12/4 stock I have to see if it is enough, otherwise I will need to make a visit out to Armstrong lumber.

    Zach,
While I am pleased to be asked to be your friend, I must admit I do not recall having conversed with you before. What drives you to wish to be my friend?

Hi Zach, I'm in Auburn Hills (northern suburb of Detroit). I used to take waterski lessons in Charlotte. Nice area, not much congestion like here.
  10. Best wishes for the New Year everyone. I hope that you all can get some more time in the shop and make some great projects that make people happy.

Learn a new skill, tune up your machines, clean your shop. That is what a New Year is all about.

    Best of luck,

    Zach
