  1. Hello Lowell,

I just logged in after a very long time of not visiting this site. So needless to say I just saw your message. As the general rule, kiln dried wood just does not work very good for steam bending. On the other hand I have bent some, I think it is worth a try if you got some really straight stock and then try soaking it in water until it is totally saturated.

My chair in Kerrville was Curly Maple. I ordered the wood from Pennsylvania and got it green. It dried out so I soaked it in PVC pipe until it sank, in other words till it was totally saturated. I would not really recommend making windsors out of CM, the wood can be brittle and it is very risky trying to bend that stuff.

Best of luck, keep in touch.

    Frank,

There is a post in the woodworking projects forum that is a bout a sack back Windsor. The lady made her chairs from cherry. She steam bent the the bent pieces.

Is it possible to steam bend kiln dried hard woods.

I have some tiger maple that would make a "killer" Windsor, but I never have considered it because of the bending issue.

I saw your chair at Kerrville this year, but I don't remember what wood you used.

OBTW, I like your new web site.
