Keep the central batten press fit tight in your most humid month. Wax the sides before assembly, that way if you get stuck as I did, it can be driven out from below.

I made my center batten "wide" enough to slip F clamps through the gaps.

Afterwards I installed a Record 146 holdfast. That has been more useful for light clamping, assembly, carving, etc. The collar must be let into the top.

The best part of a full length batten is face planing long boards from either side of my bench.

About Brent VanFossen
Biography:
I've been a life-long woodworker, and am mostly self-taught. I enjoy using a well-tuned hand tool, but will use power tools and machinery with no guilt whatsoever - as seems appropriate to the job.

I once built a solid oak bookshelf in the living room of my apartment using nothing more than a router, a drill, a folding workbench, and a few clamps. I built the desk my wife has used for the last almost 20 years. I'm building cabinets now, fettling a few 100-year old hand planes, arranging the shop, and looking forward to evenings and weekends.
