Lumber supply
Has been restocked..
Bought 10 planks...for $30...had to cut a few of the 10 footers down, to fit into the Trunk of my Chevy Equinox...
Attachment 519069
Eight 1 x 6 x 6'
Five 1 x 4 x 6'
And he threw in a stack of shorts
Attachment 519070
And a 3/4" x 8" x 39" slab..
The 1 x 6 planks..
Attachment 519071
8 of them..
So...I should be set for any Projects coming up in May...
Not too bad of a day?
-
Is it the usual ash? I am green with envy at being able to source lumber locally. Look forward to seeing what you do with it.
-
I suppose finding local straight-grained lumber in the Hill Country is difficult, but you've got some excellent wood right in your backyard. Mesquite, cherry, walnut, Eastern and Mountain cedar, live oak, etc. And you don't have to go all that far for the straight stuff either. Plenty of pine, oak, pecan just the other side of I-35.
-
Just Ash..same as I always try to get...as I like the way it works, with the tools I have...
By the time we got the Chevy loaded up...there were 18 boards IN the trunk...and my wallet was $30 lighter....3rd Wednesday of May, I can go and get another such load, as that is the next Pay Day..
BTW...that black spider that was trying to hitch a ride on one of the 1 x 4s? Was free of charge....afraid it did not survive when the next 1x4 was slapped down...
So...now the hunt for a next Project begins....Maybe a Chest of Drawers for the Boss to store all her nightgowns in?
-
$30 for all of that? That's crazy! I couldn't buy that much pine for that price!
-
I bought about the same amount of wood, same species, just a little bit more expensive and the guy threw in a Bedrock 607 and four Bell System braces. I'll probably build a cabinet for the braces with some of the wood.

So..set up a Drafting Table, of sorts...
Attachment 519210
And, since the edge and the bevel are square to each other...
Attachment 519211
Made a nice drafting square...the 3-1/2 sections (8) are Raised panels...
Then a bit of Math 101...
Attachment 519212
Wanting to know how long to make a few cuts...and then selected a trio of planks to haul to the shop..
Attachment 519213
Straight grain, quarter sawn Ash...
Attachment 519214
But, there were a few issues..
Attachment 519215
Like a few splits...
First cross cuts were done..
Attachment 519216
So, next episode will involve a lot of rip cuts
Stay tuned...

Ripped the long planks into 4 blanks for the stiles...
Attachment 519226
The Rails were having issues...
Attachment 519227
With 18" length looking way too long...and, IF I shortened it down to 15-3/8" long...and narrowed them down to 1-3/8" width..I might get better use out of the boards on hand..
Attachment 519228
The 2" wide ones will stay at 2" wide. Needed 14 narrow rails..
Attachment 519229
But the planks had issues...wound up bringing a 4th plank to the shop...to make 4 narrow rails...was short 2, and needed 2 others to replace..
Attachment 519230
The 2 that were having a case of the splits..
Kind of hard to run a groove, in a board like this..
Attachment 519231
Stay tuned...

7 Attachment(s)
Grooves have been run...over on the tablesaw...as the fence makes using this a bit rough..
Attachment 519263
Rails are 1-3/8" wide...not enough left to put in a vise, and not hit the fence....was also having trouble keeping it centered on the 2" wide rails...But..tablesaw left this behind..
Attachment 519264
Needed to clean up these..
Attachment 519265
Slivers....at least the Stanley No. 71-1/2 doesn't really need a fence down in a groove..
Attachment 519266
Looking much better, now..
Attachment 519267
2 more were over setting up to mill tenons..
Attachment 519268
With this result
Attachment 519269
Which was a LOT of work on the saw..for 36 tenons..
Stay tuned..I did Raised Panels, today!

Going to try something else...had Photo Issues with the last post...had to go back and RELOAD all the photos in the last post...never change anything, before or after....so, will try the spoon fed route...
Today was doing Raised Panels for the sides of the chest...First, I needed to haul a few boards to the shop..
Attachment 519281
Was hoping to get more than 5 pieces out of each of these....3/4" x 4" x 77"...but, there isn't all that much room IN the shop..
Attachment 519282
Plus dealing with ends like this..
Attachment 519283
Got those 2 chopped up into 10 blanks....had to go back upstairs and pick out 2 more decent planks...and hope I can get 6 more blanks..
Stay tuned..
-
4 Attachment(s)
So far, so good...
Had one 1 x 4 x 5' to bring along, and a 1 x 6 x 4' to use...the 1 x 4 was good enough to give me 3 more blanks as is..
Attachment 519286
But, the 1 x 6?
Attachment 519287
Will need a bit more work...I did check for the exact length these all needed to be..
Attachment 519288
There was a problem, though...
Attachment 519289
Which width to use? And, most were tapered, to boot...
Stay tuned..
-
2 Attachment(s)
Picked out the narrowest end..set the rip fence to that..
Attachment 519290
Place the straightest edge against the fence, and run everything through, including the 3 wide boards from the 1 x 6..
Attachment 519291
Yeah...some were a bit curvy...
Ok, now have 16 blanks to roughly all the same size...next?
-
2 Attachment(s)
The "show face" needs to be beveled on all 4 edges...
Set up the saw with the Zero Clearance Overlay...and tilt the blade to the 15 degree mark on the saw's scale..
Attachment 519292
Stand a blank straight up, good side away from the fence, shove through..rotate 90 degrees, repeat...until all 4 edges have a bevel...supposed to look like this...
Attachment 519293
Repeat for all 16 panels...
Next?
-
4 Attachment(s)
I also need a rebate all the way around each panel...two saw cuts..one to make a kerf cut..
Attachment 519294
And the second setting to remove the waste...
Attachment 519295
So that the panels will sit into the grooves in both the rails and the stiles..
So..2 hours in the shop, this morning..
Attachment 519296
And all 16 panels are done, awaiting fine tuning, of course...
Made a royal mess of the shop's floor, too...
Attachment 519297
I think the saw and I both needed a rest...
Tomorrow? will be working on the stiles....and trying for a glue-up of at least one side by Monday...
Stay tuned...Have about 2 weeks before the Boss is scheduled to come home...would like to be done by then? We'll see...

75 minutes in the shop, today...and I am soaked. Will need to look for a Shop Fan...took 36 photos today..had to do some editing...plan was to do a bit of layout on the 4 stiles..then see about MAYBE running the Stanley 45 to plough some grooves...cutter for the #45 is a #14, btw..
This MIGHT give you an idea...
Attachment 519324
The bare spots on the floor? Is where my feet were,,, while pushing this "Noodle Maker" along..
Attachment 519325...
So...lay out time..to find how long, or short to make these..
Attachment 519329
Stay tuned..
