ShopNotes Vol 16, Issue 96 (Nov/Dec 2007) has plans for a large disk sander with an extended arbor. I don't know if they have back issues on line. If you can't find the issue I would be willing to loan it to you.

I saw a humongous one recently that was made by cutting away at the drum of a commercial dryer.
Super bin, super smooth.
