I know some championship BBQ Teams that swear by Pecan for smoking. They prefer it and fruit woods (Apple & Pear) to hickory.
Those sound like nice boards...make some tables or cabinets with them to remember your uncle. You should have a few small unusable scraps left to enhance your culinary experiences, too... :D
