Wow, I had forgotten all about this project and am just now checking out Kens updated pics. What a beauty!! It does my heart good to see this moving forward again, I only wish our pal Dewey was around to see this. I lost all contact with him a some time ago. All the new work that has been done is simply amazing!! The hinges, the carving the HANDLE, Belton is perfect!! This is so cool to me Im excited again about it!!
Ken thanks for the pics!!

Cody,
Because I live in a very arrid area, I unboxed and unwrapped it over a two week period as I didn't want to induce any cracking, checking etc.
I actually have been working on it.
Initially I tried turning several different combinations of round knobs from different materials but round knobs don't go well with the beautiful handle that's already on the top.
Finally I came up with an idea of using a "Keith Burns" inspired double finial for a handle vs a round knob. If you go to my profile and can access my one and only album, you will see photos of my first "mock up". Note the standoffs for the handle will be blackwood too. I just happened to use some handy scrap when I made the mock up.
I put the photos there for John Keeton and Steve Schlumph to give me their opinions and inputs. Based on one of their inputs and suggestions, the cylinder in the middle is a piece of maple burl connecting the two halves or Burns' finials. That should tie it more to the existing handle.
I had to order more blackwood as I have blown up 2 attempts so far but last night I got one handle turned and drilled. If the turning gods smile today and the moon is in the right quadrant, I should have it done later today.
We may want to consider building a shipping container to put this in before I send it on. It was well wrapped in bubble wrap when I got it but the card board box had obviously been treated pretty roughly enroute. It was obvious that Keith had purchased a new box but it got hammered pretty hard during shipment.
I have an early morning doctor's appointment but hope to finish it early afternoon. If not, I have enough blackwood for two more attempts.

Cool. The handle (and the box) look great.

In case anyone else is interested here's a link to the
MOCKUP......the shape and size will be the same but....
the cylinder in the middle of the handle will be maple burl to try to match the maple burl on the lid's handle.
the rest of the handle including the standoff's will be African blackwood

Nifty Noodles!
I had always envisioned knobs, but the handle looks appropriate with the lid handle.
good job!

Mike,
I turned 6-8 different knobs with different forms and wood combinations and round just seemed to clash with that angular top handle.
This is really a spinoff of a finial that Keith Burns uses a lot on some of his HFs he turns. I got this idea and it sure seemed to go better with the design.
I got one set of "standoffs" turned yesterday but believe I can do better. Unfortunately I had some personal business that demands immediate attention and may not get a chance to turn another set until tomorrow. In the next couple days I hope to have my portion finished and send it on to the next person.
-
Ken, the handle is perfect. So much better than knobs!
-
Thanks Belinda. I have the handle in the process. I want to turn another set of standoffs for the handle and another maple burl cylinder that has a little more burl in it.
-
Ken,
Your thought process is spot on! I really like the direction you have taken and the way it ties in with the whole project. Nice to see the project back on track. There is no hurry to get the project done as long as we keep moving forward.
Does anyone know if we have a plan in place for the raffle once the project is finished? Who is taking charge of the final disposition?
-
Belton,
Thanks for the compliments.
I have blown up two more attempts. I have one in the process right now.
I hope to have my part done by weeks end and then my recommendation is that I build a plywood box for it for furter protection.
Then I would wait until the holidays are over to ship it to help prevent it from being lost or mishandled during the holiday rush.

Humbled............
In the morning I will be making a jig and doing some sanding. I hope this handle survives. 5 previous attempts haven't survived and have humbled me beyond belief. I am on my last piece of blackwood and maple burl. If this one doesn't survive this last step, I'll have to order some more materials and go at it again.
Whew!
Photos to follow hopefully tomorrow.
Though it will add cost to the shipping, I think it would be wise to make a plywood container and wrap the box in bubble wrap and then strap it in place within the container. Keith wrapped it in bubble wrap and placed it in a new box. It arrived okay but the box had been pretty well roughed up.
I will update tomorrow.

This is going to be quick as I want to get back to that football game but I was getting bored. I practiced drilling the mounting holes most of the afternoon. I was sweating blood. This handle is my 6th attempt and I was out of maple burl and blackwood.
I still have to epoxy this in and I have to turn the handle for the secret drawer. It will be considerably easier.
I was sweating blood about drilling this drawer and ruining some else's craftsmanship.
Better photos to follow.

Bruce,
Thanks!
I was struggling to get those tolerances..the turned standoff diameter to match the hole....and the holes in the handle to be perpendicular to the central plane of the handle.
Handle centered in both planes with the drawer front.
All the while sweating destroying the other guy's work. I don't know that I ever want to go through this again. If I destroy my own work. No problem. But to damage another person's work.....that ate on me.
The process was a real educational experience!
Tomorrow I'll epoxy this one into the drawer and turn the handle for the secret drawer. Because of it's restricted access location, it will have a handle of a different size and shape for functionality.

Ken,
You are doing a great job!
