End table completed.
Hi folks,
I just completed an end table I have been working on for quite some time. This is my first table, heck Just about everything here was a first for me.
First all wood drawers, half blind dovetails tapered legs, draw-bored M&T joints.
Walnut with birds-eye drawer fronts. Secondary wood is poplar. Finish on the walnut is BLO and dark garnet shellac. I used blond shellac without BLO on the drawer fronts
I used hand tools for a good portion of the work. Legs are hand tapered, top and drawer bottoms are hand chamfered. DT's are hand cut, you can tell from the big gaps! Top, aprons, and drawer fronts were hand planed & scraped.
The aprons are a little over 9" wide. I split the apron into two tenons, glued the top one and draw-bored the bottom with maple pegs. The top peg does not go through the tenon, its just theres for looks.
I think It is a bit too high at 26", I should have brought it into the house before I tapered the legs. I would cut them down, but I have no idea how to do it now! I'm not real fond of the top either, I wish I had left a bit more overhang on the sides. I may make a new top.
I plan to let the shellac sure for a couple of weeks and then rub it out with wax. I have never done that before either, anyone have any recomendation on wax?
Thanks for looking, What do you think?

Jonathan,
I think this is a spectacular first project, actually it's a great piece of furniture regardless of how many you've done before. I agree that for an end table it could be a bit shorter, but it's got real style. I don't think the top needs to protrude any more than it does. I think you can go ahead and wax the piece without any further curing. I've applied wax after only a day and it's taken just fine.
Great job.

Man, that's some absolutely gorgeous wood. You did a great job using it :D As for wax. I like using a brand I get at HD, it's called Butcher's.
