"Wow"!!!! Clicking on that link...now!
Fantastic!
Dave, you do amazing work in SU. I have a lot to learn.
Another of the Morris chair. This time with a bit more light and a tiny bit of post Podium processing.
Thanks for the compliments, guys.
As a side note, a rendering application like this does require some good housekeeping habits when working in SU. Be sure to keep track of which faces are out when you're drawing. Don't apply your textures until you've finished and know that you have no exposed back faces.
Gosh Dave,
I really don’t quite know what to say… flashback to Michael Creighton’s Rising Sun.
Seriously though, I am really impressed with that rendering. Your investment in time has certainly paid off, and that you are so willing to guide and tutor others in learning SketchUp is commendable.
Thanks,
Frank
Pretty impressive output. Not impressed by the 'windwos only' part though. Given the almost completely UI free nature of such a program it's very hard to see any good reason to exclude Macs.
I noticed this little gotcha when I was playing with it earlier.Quote:

It really did a nice job on the "stock" SU components in the piece, such as the windows. This rendering thing is pretty kewel when you want to really visualize how something looks.
Tim, I wouldn't be surprised if a Mac version is released one of these days. The fellow who is doing the development has plenty on his plate without adding multiple platforms right away. I'd bet once he gets the little bugs worked out, a Mac version will be next.
Jim, you can add as many lights as you need to make the scene brighter. If I get time on Wednesday I'll try to post an overview of how I do the lighting for rendering with either Podium or Kerkythea.
Jim -
Dave gave me a great tip that has helped immensely. Change the "Face Back color" within Sketchup. Go to Window / Model Info / Color and Change Face Back to a bright color that is distinguishable. I chose orange, for example. Then save these changes in a template and you have settings for when you startup Sketchup for drawing and keeping faces oriented properly.
Once set, I can quickly reverse or orient faces so orange is to the back or inside of an object.
I agree with all - Dave is the master of SU. Anxious to learn more from him on the rendering tools.
Neil
Wow! There's gonna come a time when we don't need to make our furniture in the shop. We will just sit our virtual selves on virtual chairs and live in virtual houses. I never saw the matrix, but I think we are getting close.
Thanks for raising the art of SketchUp.
Neil, thanks for passing on the tip! For normal drawing, I've not really been caring about the faces being innies or outies, but if I decide to embrace rendering (and who can resist that for too long... ;) ), I'll have to learn to mind my Ps and Qs!
I told Neil to make the back color obnoxious and he did. :D I think that's a good idea for evryone using GSU. As it is the differences are rather subtle, especially if you have problems with color vision. Thanks for adding that Neil.
I just thought I'd add this to give you all an idea of how I lit the model of the house. This rendering was done with the same light settings but at the fastest so the quality isn't as good.

Aloha,
Thanks for the tip!
After downloading, I seem to be having trouble finding where it went or how to initiate it in Google SU.
Suggestions, please?
Thanks!
Hi Ken.
Look for Podium in the Plugins menu. It should be there.
And here's a recent quickie. 1 min, 8 sec to render.

Aloha Dave,
Found it! Thank you! Now to figure out how this thing works. :D
Aloha
Ken, read the information on the suplugins site. It'll give a good start.
OK, Dave.....I'm feeling pretty dumb right now. I'm looking at my Google SketchUp interface, more specifically at the menus across the top. I don't see a "Plug-Ins" menu item. Am I missing something? I made sure that I am using the most recent version of the software, so I'm stumped.
I've also not had my coffee yet today, so that may have something to do with it...

Note that today, 10 December 2006, is the last day that the free Beta version of SU Podium is available for download. According to the site it will next go on sale with a promotional introductory price of $149….Quote:

Jim, Kerkyhtea is a good thing to learn. It has more capability than Podium will.
I imagine there are a lot of folks that will find the final offering price worth the time savings.
Aloha,

Same thing happened to me. What I ended up doing was:
- Close Sketchup.
- open Windows Explorer
- click on My Computer
- click on C: drive
- click Program files
- click Google
- click Google Sketchup
There should be a Plugins folder. If Podium has its own folder, move to Plugins folder. Reopen Sketchup. You should now have a plugins tab at the top.
Hope this works for you as it did for me.
Aloha
Aloha Ken,
You should alos make sure you have a file called sketchup.rb in the Plugins folder. If you don't open the Examples folder and copy it from there into the Plugins folder.
The problem some folks have is when they run the installation EXE is not changing the target location to Program Files\Google\SketchUp from Program Files\@Last\SketchUp. If you don't have the @Last directory on your computer, who knows where it goes.
Aloha Dave,
Thank you for pointing that out. I checked and it was there, but if you hadn't mention it I would have had no way of knowing otherwise.
Okay here's where I'm at. After following the SUPodium tutorial, I was able to preview a very nice rendering in the little preview box. But after saving the file as a jpg, I noticed that some of the edges of the rendering are quite jagged.
Is this normal?
Aloha
Yeah, the jagged edges are probably normal IF you are enlarging that tiny little preview to look at it. It would almost be like enlarging your avatar and looking at that.
I'm asuming you got V1.1 which was the latest beta. If you look at the Podium dialog box you'll see an arrow at the top right corner. Click on that and you'll see an option for setting the image size. You can set it to 640x480 which will help.
You should also see a menu entry called Settings. You can adjust the quality which those sliders. The bottom one helps with antialiasing which removes or at least reduces the jagged edges.

Ah, that's better! Thank you, sir!
Keith, glad you got it worked out.
