For dogs, I just use short pieces of dowels that fit the dog holes and slip rubber chair leg bottoms on the end to provide a non-slip surface and keep the dogs from falling through. I'd bet wrapping a large rubber band several times around the end would also work.
I used a dowel cut similar to the example, bit continued the cut down about 1 1/2" then placed a toothpick at the bottom of the cut forming a slight 'spring' to hold the dog in place. Think I saw that on WoodWright Shop...

Since your link is to round dogs, I'll assume 3/4" round. I made these by turning down a 7/8" dowel on the tablesaw. The version in your link looks about as easy as it could get.
