You could also look at getting a set of replacement irons from St. James bay for the Stanley 48. I think they may be the same size iron as the Union variant.
Very nice, especially knowing the family history. And for those of you who despise 45's and 55's, I'll gladly take them off your hands. I love my 45 (both the Stanley and the Colt).
Its been 2-1/2 years since my wife`s suffering finally ended. I took solace in that she was no longer in pain. It will be difficult, but you need to go on for her memory. I wish you well.
For what it's worth, the relationship of measured torque to force (like bolt tension from a tightened bolt) can vary widely, from a clean/dry thread condition to a rusted condition to a lubricated...
I've checkered about 80 stocks; some just with simple panels, some with full wrap-around patterns. A good place to start is with a basic set of DemBart checkering tools, probably at 18 points per...
Calling or visiting Bob is definitely in order. I stopped by his shop in Mesa this summer while I was in Phoenix. Very cool, lots (LOTS) of replacement parts for Stanleys, and he does it all in his...
Craig-
Try St. James Bay Tool in Mesa Arizona. I don't have his phone number at hand, but I was down there this summer and picked up one of his plane kits (really cool) and some parts for my 45. ...
The key thing in concrete longevity (and quality) is the water/cement ratio, which is the weight of water to the weight of cement in the concrete. Most thin-slab concrete issues arise out of an...
To reduce the amount/frequency of cracks-
1. Keep the water-cement ratio to less than 0.45- the weight of water to the weight of cement in the mix. It will be a stiff mix, but adding water to...
Joe-
Unfortunately, I'm going down that same road with my wife- only married 17 years (18 this Labor Day). She might make it to 51 this summer, but her last CA 125 was over 1,100, none of the...
From my late father-
Don't let going to college get in the way of your education.
Pretty wise hand, he.
One question- have you tried the thin Stanley irons on something nasty, and if so, how well did it work with the 50 degrees?
Cool looking builds, by the way.
I do a fair amount of high-angle work, mostly on rock, but I do a little bit of structural access as well. Fall protection is a big thing, and the regulatory types I've run across would be citing...
I've worn White's logger/smokejumpers for 30 years. I have one pair that's older than my 21-year-old-daughter (they're almost 28 years old). My main pair has been re-built twice. I'm an engineer...
For your responses. I haven't had time to take the chuck apart during the week, but I'm going to do so tomorrow (Friday) night. I'll try straightening the springs and measure them, and (thanks to...
I just bought an aged 77A eggbeater for $8.00, and it after disassembling the chuck, it seems the jaw springs are pretty kinked, probably from an earlier disassembly episode.
Does anyone know of...
Doug-
My wife has just finished her second round of being staged at IV- a very nasty lobular breast cancer (5 years between diagnoses). This time, chemo only, but. . 6-1/2 months, 3 weeks each...
I've run a 10 degree back-bevel in my 4-1/2 on QSWO, and it does help, but I think running a heavier-than-original iron would probably help more.
Scott-
It's kind of like getting shot at- after a while, you get a little numb.
We get several calls every evening from some group collecting for something; both the Democrats and Republicans,...
a corollary on a Mark Twain:
"Don't let college get in the way of your education", by my late father some 32 years ago upon my initial departure for "higher education".

Very well executed, Dave. I've been trying to lay out something similar that would fit my current crop of iron and woodies (35+) plus chisels and saws. I've almost come to the point where I'm...
The folks in the PRC continue to steal any idea they can (from computers to Terex trucks to Caterpillar equipment to our missile technology and now to LV planes). They do so without any hesitation. ...
Bite the bullet and buy a pair of White's Logger/Smokejumpers. They'll cost you at least $400.00, but they're worth it if you work outside. I'm sending in a pair next week to have them rebuilt. ...
Adam-
I use my 4-1/2 quite a bit on hardwoods, and it generally does it part if I do mine (kind of like shooting). My part is keeping the iron sharp. I use a variation of the "scary sharp"...
