Peter Galbert talks about freezing it in his recent book. He says to put it in ice cube trays so that you can just remove how much you need. If he says it's ok, I'm inclined to believe it.
DMT plates are guaranteed for life. Contact the company and see what they say about it. My Extra Extra Fine plate had a small burr that appeared right in the center of the plate after about two years...
I talked with Mark Harrell just yesterday. Bad Axe is indeed alive and well.
I built a Schwarz style saw bench that my five year old uses as a workbench. No vise, but it has some dog holes he likes to use. And it's just the right height for him. And, I get to use it!
I had the same problem. The holdfasts would get nice and tight, but the wood still was able to move some. Glueing leather pads on each of the holdfasts fixed that. Now they are rock solid with just...
Here's my finished vise. Total capacity between screws is 13.5". Opens to 4". I make a lot of small boxes so the wide capacity is nice for clamping the boxes sideways and cleaning up dovetails....
I've had good luck with some fine steel wool and mineral spirits. Hit it with some paste wax or oil afterwards and I'm good to go again.
Thanks Maurice! That Enco sale was a great deal. So far I have just under $35 invested. I still have 20" of acme rod and right more of the nuts. Trying to decide how to use the rest of it. Maybe use...
I went the same cheap Enco route as well. I just bought a 3' length of 1/2" rod and cut 2" handles from it instead of sourcing hand wheels. Tig welded those to the nuts for a wing nut style handle....
I got a new hewing stump! Putting it to work already!
I do use it a bit in a side to side motion. It does work really well that way. And that is a function that the square blades are not capable of.
I got my hewing axe off the bay. Just the head only. Made the handle out of some walnut from our ranch. Made a leather sheath as well. This guy works great! I'd like a smaller one for finer work. The...
Mine was the same way. It worked fine for smoothing if you skewed it, but it did take quite a few passes before the surface was actually level. I prefer the squared off blade myself.
I think it looks amazing! The black wood was a classy choice.
I see no problem with building it to the exact dimensions. You are building it for personal use and not to sell. And you are posting the build online as an educational resource on hand tool work. All...
I purchased one of the new sweethearts in the 1/8" size. I ground the shoulders down and use it for cleaning up small dovetails. It's a really well made tool. I'm very happy with it.
I've got to admit, those handles are pretty cool! Odd looking, but cool nonetheless.
+1 on By Hand and Eye. Amazing resource.
Way to go Derek!! Can't wait to get home and see if the new issue is waiting for me now!
Are they still sending those out???
+1 on the Lee Valley low angle shave. Inexpensive and very versatile.
That's a nice looking dovetail marker. I can appreciate the use of dovetails on a dovetail marker!
Thanks for the info Mel. I had no idea. Time to do a little research!
I picked up this set of dividers last weekend. They were part of a large group of tools that I found on Craigslist. I didn't pay much attention to them when I first bought them. But I just finished...
