I have the LV dowel former and it works great. Not much I can say about it other than I just use it over a dog hole in my bench.

I put chalk on my saw files before using them, they seem to cut a little smoother with the chalk and apparently makes the file last longer.

This is how I store mine. Some of the saws in there are pre 1900 and are just fine.

Why not write it in pencil then seal over the text with shellac sealer, once you have made the last measurement then shellac the whole thing to preserve it.

So as we all know there is an uncertainty as to what the nib on the end of the saw plate was actually used for, some say decoration, other say to secure a batten in to which the teeth sat to...
All it needs is a quick going over with the jack plane then the smoother/try plane (depending on the size). I would never dream of having a planer/thicknesser too noisy and too much dust.

I have done fully unplugged for a few years now, the hardest part is resawing on a hot summers day so I went and bought a 16" bandsaw. Buying the bandsaw has made cuts like the one below a breeze (I...
When planing I brush my finger tips over the surface of the wood, doing this I can feel the undulations in the surface and then plane accordingly. Most of the time its a subconscious thing.

I use this method when making raised panels, using a knife or gauge line start with a wooden rabbet plane once its established then go to a badger plane. Works a treat.

Use a small hammer and a nail set to set the teeth on a block of hardwood, you have to make sure you use consistent blows or the set will be uneven. Obviously do every other tooth on one side then...
Subscribe to Paul Sellers Woodworking Masterclasses, he is doing a free series on them at the moment all made by hand. And its free.

Don't alter the saws geometry, for a clean cut with no splintering (I presume you mean when crosscutting) use a knife wall as described be Paul Sellers well described here by the accidental...
I also have narex mortice and premium chisels and all are fine.

Now that's what I call a gents saw! Beautiful as usual Ron.

I would want the joint to be self supporting when together but not so tight you have to knock it together.

Only time I ever lift off is when taking really fine shavings, I have found that if I don't lift off then the shavings get pulled back through the mouth of the plane and then jam under the plane. I...
I have most of Haywards books and they are all excellent. As recommended above Bernard E Jones' practical woodworker is an amazing source of info, I have a pressing from 1934 and they are in constant...
I just use a chisel to pare down then a plain old number 4 to finish off

I guess my point was really that to all intense and purposes it makes no difference where the chisels were made as long as they do their job, all we have to be aware of is that just because it says...
The word HAD is key here. The Marples brand was bought out by Irwin some time ago, they had the parts made in China and then they were assembled in Sheffield therefore allowing them to use the words...
Just because they say made in Sheffield that does not mean the steel is made there, just that they are assembled there.
