How do you find the Atoma as a sharpening stone? I have only used mine for flattening waterstones.

After you rub out how do you remove either the mineral oil, or the oily residue from the mineral spirits? I generally use paste wax to rub out because I have no answer to that question, and I like...
Winter is coming.
I was always under the impression that their Antique Oil was an oil/varnish blend. I haven't used it myself to know for sure, but I think I read it in Flexner and on this forum quite a few times.
I think this was mentioned in the latest issue of Fine Woodworking. Sounded very promising if all the claims about it were true.
I thought this too when I saw the picture. It must feel great going from drawing to executed piece. Great job Christopher.
It's what I use, but I haven't tried the I-wheels so I have no comparison. I like the K-wheel that I have though.
I think the real trick is to put the vast majority of the force towards the fence, and very, very little pushing down. I have a couple of nice Stanley No. 65 pin gauges and they are great, though I...
I found no need to use any finish at all on my bench. I still don't regret that decision.
Now that is interesting.
I wiped it on before I knew enough to know how little I actually knew, and it turned out... pretty damn good! I even used steel wool between every coat and no rust spots anywhere. The gods of...
I have been living with the Veritas Low Angle shave for a while now, and it is my only shave so I use it for everything. I think it is good, not great. Even after roughing up the blade, I still find...
Very interesting, thanks for that.
I don't know if it has been discussed in this thread yet David, but what about if it was a two stone challenge? What oil stones would you use then? Any of the easily commercially accessible synthetic...
I like baby oil. It is just light mineral oil (seems very thin) with scent and aloe vera. Cheap, and the bottle has a nice applicator to get just the right amount. It also doesn't hurt that we had...
I'll just through my hat into the ring for the Narex mortise chisels. I think they are a good size for furniture work, keep a decent edge after you hone though the factory bevel a little way, and the...
I've gone from a DMT Extra Fine to a piece of MDF with green crayon on it and gotten good results, but with a honing guide, not freehand. Though my DMT has crapped out on me. I can barely get it to...
I got really good results with water stones with a convex bevel. Very sharp, very fast. I don't have a very coarse starting stone so I found my bevel angle would creep up on me. I liked it a lot...
Yeah, I figured as much. I have vintage and modern O1 and A2. I still like this system though.
I like the premise of this thread, but how would it work with a hodge-podge of different types of steels? Not that I am dissatisfied with my current setup in any way, just curious. A grinder and two...
So Warren, what would you use a fixed size, fixed fence fillister for anyway? Must be something that would be used fairly often to have a dedicated plane for it.
Thanks for the hard work you put into this David. It looks completely accomplishable by someone of my skill level. That fillister looks like a good project too. I wonder if there are anymore planes...
I've gotten a lot more use out of my plow than my router plane too, though you would have to pry my router plane from my cold, dead hands.
Has anyone tried the Stanley files? My closest big box home centre sells them exclusively. They look quite nice, but that clearly doesn't mean much.
Same here. I find baby oil better overall. I wouldn't even consider using mine with water now.
