Pre-compress the fibers with a sledge :D
User comfort is a very personal thing. I had the DX60 veritas block, it did not fit my hand at all. Even tho it looked like a very comfortable tool to use, it was not. Atleast in my hands.
I...
And my girlfriend calls me a wood horder for having ~15-20 planks+scraps acclimating in my tiny shop :D She would have me hospitalized if I started storing wood in the freezer :o
Heres the same guy giving a lesson in mortising :) (with english subtitles)

My few japanese mortisers couldent handle that kind of abuse. Any idea what kind of steels the chinese would use traditionally for mortising chisels?
I would guess they use a high carbon like the...
dont stain, it will look rather ugly, atleast after working with sweaty hands.
You can get rosewood or ebony handles for your chisels pretty easily, there are a few japanese tool dealers who can...
Very lucky man to get such premium chisels :)
I have 90% of my japanese stricking chisels with boxwood handles. Very tough material, yo will notice when you're mushrooming the head after hooping....
I think its a completely different situation when you're trying to flatten a rough boards face.
Applying the right pressure is much easier (atleast for me) when i'm abit more 'on top of the work',...

Assuming you're using this method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aDPZzMvVTA (Lie-Nielsen chisel sharpening advice -> lapping/honing the back with forward and back strokes)
...I cant think of...
Try what works for you! You wont destroy the stones trying out different methods. Just dont drop them on a concrete floor, everything else they can pretty much handle :)
But starting out in...
Bah...I say.
If he already has the MKII why swich methods? The veritas honing guide works perfectly once you learn to use it properly and understand its limitations.
Stick with what...
I think you are clamping the blade wrong. You need to advance both of the screws equally or the blade will be skewed.
Cranking down one screw first and then the second will cause the blade to...
Does the Lie-Nielsen hotdog handle fit the Veritas LA jack?
I had the naniwa SS stones. They sure polish like nothing else, but they were a real pain to use sometimes.
The stiction you get with these stones was a serious problem. Plus they warped quite...
I would cut that joint with handsaws.
First the perpendiculars, then the slopes with a japanese azebiki(saw for cutting in the center of a panel) I would saw from the middle of the cut.
Maybe a...
