I used square 1/2" nuts from Lowes, and a benchtop mortiser with a 3/8" chisel to make the "holes". The thickness of the nuts was just a bit less than 3/8". I think they cost around 70 cents apiece...

The error is double when the boards are in one orientation, however in the other orientation (flip one board vertically) the error cancels itself out. It is not that hard to get it very close to true...

Prefinish your pieces before glue up, whatever squeezout you get won't stick. I use an old plane blade to pop off the dry glue. It's hard to resist the urge to assemble and glue up a project prior to...
The second time I broke the head off of a screw in a project (red oak) that I had invested a lot of time in was when I gave up on wood screws. Drilling an oversized hole greatly reduces the strength...

All of the sides of a dowel are long grain, however the drilled holes are a combination of long grain, end grain and something in between the two. With a mortise and tenon, the mortise is...
One definitely needs to take into consideration adhesive strength when calculating the strength of a joint. Adhesive strength is greatly compromised when long grain is glued to end grain, and even...
I reallly enjoy reading the forum and have found lots of useful information here.
I had thought about the dowelmax as a means of producing quick joints, but ultimately decided against it. Price...
