Glenn, Thanks for the kind words. I was torn between garnet and amber, and ended up going with amber... though I think either would have been a good choice. I had considered adding a light coat of...

I've actually been carving for awhile, so that wasn't too bad. But this was my first large scale attempt at case work and fitting drawers. Also there were a few new elements in joining the dividers,...
I finally finished my secretary project. I started it over a year and a half ago (but that time also included a full kitchen remodel, including building new cabinets). I just wanted to share the...
I thought $250 sounded high, and it only has a 1/3 hp motor. I haven't found much else on the used market... everything seems to be more entry level. I have several second hand tools. You can...
I've looked very seriously at this one (Jet 1221VS). It's more than I'd like to spend but I'm sure I'd be happy with it. I've never regretted buying too much tool, but I think we've all bought...
I'm sure this question has been asked many times, but searching did not yield a lot of current information, and because tools and prices are always changing, I figured I'd ask again.
I'm looking to...
Robert,
I wasn't able to open your attachment, but I've reworked the top drawer with a lip only on the sides. I've attached some pictures showing the detail of the drawer edges. (Hopefully the...
Hi Al,
All good suggestions. I think will alter the drawer face as you and Robert suggested. I suspect that is the appropriate solution. Now that I think about it, I'm sure I've seen secretaries...
Hi Robert,
That is what I suspected. It makes since to not have a lip on the top drawer now that you mention it. When building the drawers I was just focusing on the spacing and fitting of...
Thanks for all the replies so far! Sounds like there are two best options:
1) Notch the bottom edge of the lid (somehow) to accommodate the top drawer lip
2) Remove the lip of the top drawer...
Hi Patrick,
Yes the lid supports are designed for the full thickness of the lid. So I I don't think I want to go down the road of thinning the lid, but I see where you're coming from.
Hi Malcolm,
I had considered a solution like you suggested, but I'm not sure how it would look, or the impact on the structural integrity of the piece. But it definitely would solve the problem.
I'm nearing completion of an early American period secretary. I've saved the desk lid for last (no particular reason). I've got it nearly finished, but I'm not sure how to handle the hinge joint...
Robert, thanks for the reply. Actually, I'd prefer not to add locks to the drawers... it seems a bit overkill, and would significantly increase the cost as you said. I just want to be sure my use of...
Based on the hardware list, am I correct to conclude that Lonnie just used keyhole escutcheons on the lower case drawers, and did not actually use locks on the drawers? I've seen this done before,...
Yeah, carving the drawer was my first thought. But I'm hoping I can find some helpful hints about how to approach it to get consistent results (rather than just eyeballing it). I do a bit of...
I've decided to build a slant top desk with ox bow front (or reversed serpentine drawers). Right now I'm just in the design phase. I've seen different techniques for making serpentine drawers, so I...
