That doesn't sound out of line if it was in nice condition. The K4 is an early round top Bed Rock and there are quite a few collectors of them.

I set up my #7's as try planes with .005" or so camber in the blades. This is very helpful in squaring edges and flattening panels. My #8's are set as jointers with the blades sharpened straight...
Mac, the modern planes such as Stanley have plastic totes, soft blades and poorly machined castings. Buying the plane and replacing the blade and totes would put you close to the price range of a LV...
In a plane with a chip breaker, such as the Stanleys, you are limited to about 1/16" or so camber before you have to start modifying the chip breaker. That is enough camber to remove a lot of wood. ...
Well, I'm an old curmudgeon and you're wasting your money! :D
Seriously, who of us sticks to only the bare minimum of tools? I am an old tool guy but I lust over Wenzloff saws and C&W planes.
My 22" C&W woodie weighs 5 lbs 13 oz.
Lots of room from tote to adjuster knob.

There is no problem with the front knob messing up the mouth...
I agree with Andrew. You will work yourself to death trying to dimension stock with a smoother and a jack set up as a jointer. The goal is always to do as much as possible with as coarse a tool as...
Wow! You are waay more flexible than I. I could never sit on my elbow!
Sorry, couldn't resist. :)
Hey Andy, we are practically neighbors, I live in Paxico and work in Topeka. If you need help with those planes, give me a shout.
Dang it, Jr., I was sitting here snuffling over old Noah Yoder when some people showed up in my office. They probably guessed I had just lost a friend. :)
First the good news, if you don't get carried away filing, your sharpening job will be at least adequate. My sharpening is no match for Harry Strasil's but is better than most sharpening services. ...
First off, you have a Disston D-8 made between WWI & WWII. This is a workhorse of a saw that will serve you well. Check out the Disstonian Institute for more details.
Not much is involved in...
A little more info, please. Are the tops flat (i.e. Telecaster) or sculpted (i.e. Les Paul)? If you are using 5/8" maple on top, I'm guessing you will be sculpting the body some. Will the finger...
Did you get any rain in Beatrice? If not it should have been a nice weekend.
You didn't steal any tines off that hayrake in the background did you? I'm sure you've made a few tools from those...
Harry, does your friend sell those brooms? I'd love to get one for SWMBO and maybe the shop as well.
I agree 100%, Harry. People will hammer the wedge tight and leave it there and the eventual expansion/contraction of the wood will blow out the weakest spot which is the cheek. I haven't found many...
I'd like to be there but I can't make it this weekend. Have fun!
I'm getting there, Jr., I'm working my way backward through time gradually. :) It has been harder for me to find decent woodies in the wild than metal planes. I still haven't found a fine woody...
Hmmm, I'd like to discuss this with you in another thread sometime, Mike
Thank you, Mike! I don't know what you count in the 30 minutes (rust removal, sharpening, gluing a tote, etc.) but...
I don't own either plane and I don't use block planes all that much but there is a simple test in these matters: Which one would you really like to have?
Either tool will last you a lifetime so...
Louis, thank you for preparing and sharing all this.
My grandson has a difficult time with western type saws but does well with a ryoba. It is also easier for smaller, weaker kids.
You might be onto something there. Some of those pretty woods you use would really dress up a favorite user.
Steve, I think that a closed tote in the same wood as the plane body would really dress up your longer planes. I would vote for an open tote on the jack size planes. Where would you use a knob?
