Tony, lignum and vera wood also work well and may be more readily available.

Thread a knurled knob (try McMaster Carr) onto a shortened 1/4-20 hanger bolt. Instant wood threads combined with a knurled knob.

David, are there any issues on those with the non-tapered blade slipping, or difficulties getting a tight wedge loose?
Cliff
That "ledge" just outboard of the blade forms the depth stop. I'd guess it's about a 16th or so... I can't check it right now as the plane is at our new home in Maine (while I'm still sweltering...
Tony, here's a mini panel raiser from Philly:

I bought it second hand. I believe it's an early effort; his current production appears a bit more refined judging from the web site. That...
Tony (and everyone!), thanks for the comments on the snipe's bills... I too was using Larry Williams' DVD for guidance, and I agree it's a wonderful resource. I'm in awe of Charles' complex planes -...
Here's my first two (and only so far...), made a couple of years ago. They're made of walnut with verawood boxing (verawood is the stuff Rockler sells as lignum).
The blades are from L-N. I have...
There is no chip breaker on a scrub plane.
I have both. They're both great saws with a great feel and terrific performance. Wenzloff has the edge for me though; they don't use that disgusting pink stain on their handles. ;^) ;^) ;^)
David, I'm working on a pair of snipe's bills; I've used vera wood for the boxing (the stuff Rockler sells as lignum). I have it oriented at 45* toward the toe.
I had real good luck using a...

Glen, those saws are really nice! What's the red wood in the handles?
Terrific work..

Hi Jim,
It's southern live oak. It's great for mallets; these are proving to be very durable. The wood isn't much good as dimensional lumber, but makes nice turnings. It takes a very smooth...
Thanks, Jerome.
Yes, I did make the blade clamps from silicon-bronze carriage bolts. What's a bit unusual is that they allow the blade to be *locked* by tightening the handles. Some folks have...
Thanks Derek, it's much appreciated!

Thanks Ray,
The more info that gets out there on how to do these things, the more folks will try it and really learn how to make things. Too much willingness to make or do things for one's self...
Thanks for the comments on the saw Alan, they're much appreciated.

I'm a bit late to the thread (web access back on tonight - finally!- after Ike) but I thought I'd add a bit...
I made a saw a few months back just to see if I could do it:

Thanks for the replies everyone. I suspected that they were made in the 1950's but wasn't sure.
Within 5 minutes of unpacking the set I bought I was using one of them to bore holes for the vise I...
