Jim,
Why the concern with aluminum ? I thought the Carter ones are well regarded.

Adam,
I use a Tormek Grinder & associated jigs. Whilst it is a pretty big up-front expense, I have found a number of things :
my tools last much longer as I remove less steel with each...
John,
I am a neat freak, and my shop isn't that clean. Do you actually use it ?

John Ratzenberger, the actor who played Cliff Clavin on "Cheers", recently was on the Fine Woodworking podcast talking about how his carpentry skills enabled him to have a good fall-back whenever...
Roger,
Consider something that isn't audible but visual. I have certain lights in my basement shop hooked to a switch at the top of the stairs. When my wife flashes them, I see them quickly,...
John, you'll like the book. I can't remember if it was this book, or Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping Point that outlines how there are no natural experts. Those who make it look easy have spent at least...
John is right. There is a great book : Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else by Geoff Colvin (no relation). Geoff outlines how we must practice the...
Thomas,
I am interested in your pictures / experience with curtains around the lathe. I've thought about it, but haven't made the jump yet.

I've had a Tormek for 15 years, and I really find it awesome. As a woodturner, the very quick repeatability means I sharpen when I should.
For bench chisels, I am a big fan of Two Cherries.

This is the Trend I was referring to :

I had a floor sweep similar to what David shows, but took it out. I replaced it with a vacuum attachment like this one :

Looks cool.
I really like turning cedar.

Kind regards,

Yeah, 3rd grade was the worst 4 years of my life ... (LOL)
Here's a great YouTube video of a guy doing just that.

Mark,
When my father passed, I inherited his welding equipment. I'd not welded since 7th grade shop class (I was then 39 yrs old). So, I took a class at the local community college. Told them...
I'm a woodturner, and I've found that the online magazine at www.woodturningonline.com is a new concept that I really like.

I got the FWW web membership which gives me the magazine on my iPad, and access to all the plethora of information on their web site. I've found it useful.

I have the Carter steady rest and greatly like using it. Will be adding the Carter XL steady rest at some time.
I also use a steady for stuff projecting more than 4 or 5 inches from the chuck. Made my work loads easier.
I have a metal lathe (Grizzly G0765) and a wood lathe (PowerMatic 3520B) also. Having a metal lathe, I would be very reluctant to turn hard metals like steel on the wood lathe. Aluminum is...
Bill, I'd go for the Variable Speed lathe because it can also go in reverse. I use that a fair amount on my bigger lathe, and realize how much I would have liked it on my older MIDI lathe.
Bill is right.
Cost was a big factor when I started, so I began with a used lathe my grandfather got at a yard sale, then upgraded to a new bench top lathe (Delta midi lathe) when I could...
Filip,
You can get much better rates just across the border in Guangdong province. Even Guangzhou is only a 1-2 hr train ride (yes, I've taken that train).
