Assuming the color is accurate, it looks similar to all the poplar in my shop. Certainly nothing like the ash I have on hand.

Disappointing.
I went to look today at the log in question, and "cut down last week" turned into "cut down two years ago". Somewhat to their credit they had been covering it during the winters,...
Did some Googling... turns out Oregon chains are manufactured an hour west of where I live. As a result there's almost a dozen different dealers that carry their chains. I'll have to do some calling...
Oi... maybe it'd be better to just bring the log home, and then tackle the ripping after a bit of purchasing and more homework...?
@John
Wow. Awesome info. Just looking for boards. Now I need to look for where to buy a ripping chain for the saw I'm planning on renting from the local big box.
@John TenEyck
Great info. Question is do I need to go that big? At 20" diameter, I was thinking of leaving a thicker section around the pith, and maybe ripping it into two separate boards. I think...
So the tentative plan was to rent a chainsaw and buy the Granberg Chainsaw mill from Lee Valley. This seems to pop up often enough to maybe justify the mill, but not so much to justify a chainsaw....
+1 for Festool sanders. Imagine dust free sanding!
There's a local posting for a 5 ft x 20" diameter black walnut log. Freshly cut to avoid impinging on a neighbor's roof. The ends haven't been protected since being cut down. Is it worth the trouble...
I handled the set that Popular Woodworking had in their shop for review. Compared the the LN chisels, I found the Stanley's to be quite light, which may be good or bad depending upon your preference....
I like it! I'm surprised someone hasn't been cheeky enough to pick the belt sander yet...
The handles are the mystery plastic. I'm actually quite pleased with the whole thing. I'm surprised the seller had a "Buy It Now" price, and that it was so low. There are some pretty wretched looking...

Snagged it last week, and it showed up in the mail two days ago. Definitely used, but seems to be in great working condition. Best of all......
I noticed that the chaps on the other side of the Atlantic have access to a much larger selection of new Stanley tools than us colonialists. I know there have been a number of reports regarding the...
Maybe that's what was missing from my letter? I got a letter, or more correctly an envelope from Lee Valley this past week. Oddly, it was empty. I called Customer Service, but there wasn't anything...
Is there such a thing?
I picked up a large stack of maple off of Kijiji. For my first project, I had pretty good luck with the stock I milled. My current project is a small bookcase, and I'm...
Thanks. Read your profile, too bad none of your sons are interested in woodworking. It's never too late though. I'm fully 10 months in at the ripe age of 33.
Rest assured. Eyes are on the jacks, where ever they might be.
It's all good, except I still don't have one.
Understanding Bench Planes
Lastly, here's what Chris Schwarz writes about Jack Planes.
Sadly, this was all to say I understand, but also understand what I wrote and why I'm looking for a...
Far be it from me to pigeon hole a jack plane. It's name implies that it is a very (the most?) versatile plane. In my case, since I have a dedicated smoother and jointer, it would be limited in use...
Chris Schwarz wrote up a pretty good comparison at WK Fine Tools.
Being Canadian, I'll let the buy American comment alone.
I think there was a coordinating smoother on eBay the other day. I think it was mustard and red.
I've spent my fair share of $$ with LN and LV. I have a LN block/smoother/jointer and LV skew rabbet/router/scrub. My first (and only) vintage plane was a Stanley No. 50 plow plane which I purchased...
Hi Scott,
I'm actually after a satin finish. I'm using a satin poly. I'm actually just wondering what the best way of flattening and smoothing the finish is. Sand and steel wool or...
