Thanks for the great info, especially the list of zip codes from Chip. It turns out I am not in the SQAMD but apparently online suppliers do not check the zip codes and simply do not ship to...
So this must mean that it is still sold in stores but cannot be bought over the internet?
I do think it is time to move, would love to go back up to Oregon but I just put a kid in college and...
I just found out that no one will ship Behlens Rockhard or Waterlox finishes to California. I am working on a Walnut end table and was going to use Behlens so that it would match a slab table that I...
Great project! - I am an audiophile and recently replaced the amp in my Paradigm subwoofer with an O-audio. It has worked out really well.
I bet those subs sound awesome - I am curious what else...
fun - I am amazed these guys had all their fingers!
meant to type "contrast of the metal legs"
I love the contract of the metal legs, ebonized wood. I do metal and wood table legs as well and this design is really elegant, especially the maple spreader.

skip the poly and use Behlen's - it will provide a much more durable finish. If you finish carefully you can get a near "mirror" with minimum rub out.
Those are nice slabs and will make beautiful tables.
I just finished a walnut slab table, you can see it under Woodworking Projects - Walnut Slab Table Finished.
I used Behlen's Rockhard (only)...
That makes sense - thanks again Scott for your help!
. . you might also consider a gloss on the trim as that will wash very easily.
Oil base is a great choice for trim, if you don't mind the fumes in the house as it dries. Semi-Gloss Oil base will clean more easily and be more durable than water base.
My suggestion is to cut...
I recently made a Redwood Filch coffee table and used Arm-r-Seal as the finish. The problem is that every little thing scratches this finish.
I would like to sand it and re-do the top with...
I will let the experts comment on the filling of grain. I will say that Behlen's Rockhard is great table top finish. Follow the directions and thin it. I thinned to more than 10%, maybe 20 to 25%....
Yes the top is secured with screws - I made the screw holes bigger than the screws in order to accomodate movement of the wood. Although in CA the temp and humidity don't change that much so it...
Alex,
I send you a PM a while back with the info about where I got the slab, costs and etc. Check your private messages and if you didn't receive it, let me know, I will try again.
drew.
Not sure if you mean the prep work or just the finish so I will say something about both.
I posted 2 threads on the project finish forum that you should check out for finishing. There is a fair...
You guys are awesome, if you keep it my head won't fit through the door!
That is a beautiful piece of work and a piece of art. I love the design and the workmanship,
I couldn't resist including one or two more photos . . .
This is the first project of this magnitude I have taken on. I have much more respect for all you professionals now. There are a lot of firsts in this including the butterflies.
Here it is,...
Just wanted to check in - I finally got around to dying the maple table legs black with india ink, inexpensive and worked really well. One coat is black and fairly consistent.
Thanks!
I am going to look into fixing it - hopefully cheaper and better for the environment!
I have a Milwaukee Hand Impact Drill that is about 6 or 8 years old. The top part of the chuck just broke off. The rest of it is still fine.
Is this something that I can get parts for and repair...
I am learning how to make furniture and pretty new to working with fine hardwoods. I have been using a table saw my whole life but mainly for home type projects. I need a new blade (or blades) for my...
