In that case, olive sounds wonderful! :-) Though sycamore is definitely a good tip to know about; if I'm making cooking implements just for the sake of making them, I think I'll go back to that. ...
Thinking about less porous woods; one wood I'm particularly fond of is olive, as I'm always delighted with the results I get from it. The contrast of the grain is really beautiful; I'm just not sure...
That does sound nice! I like the look of curly maple particularly, so I think that could give me some really good results with this.
I think I have some mineral oil around; I don't use it for...
When I was a kid, I made a wooden straight spatula in school; a really simple thing, but my mother loved it (we'd been taught, by a great teacher, how to consider the design before we made it. As a...
Looks like this has done the trick! We're now the proud owners of one nice piece of bocote - rubbed down with acetone, coated twice with 2lb dewaxed shellac and then three times with oil-based...
Well, so far, it's going well, but tomorrow will be the real test of the final result. The bocote was wiped down with acetone, then two coats of dewaxed shellac and two coats of oil-based...
Yeah, we picked up a can of acetone rather than the naptha, and after wiping with that the dewaxed shellac is taking nicely onto the bocote so far. The second coat's already on.
The dewaxed...
Ahh, don't knock it. It's amazingly convenient - there's not far to go when you gotta go... :D
Well, best guess then is that maybe we cut through the shellac coat...that certainly sounds possible. I thought I was being careful, I'll take extra care with that this time. And acetone is...
Funny you should say that - I moved my own work into the bathroom this Winter! I enjoyed working outside a lot, especially on fine days, but you're just too dependent on the weather - I didn't like...
Well, coming back to this thread after a long time away - I had some very welcome help from the members here for a while, which allowed me to keep working until I found a solution - thanks for all...
We've been having problems getting our Bocote and Cocobolo to finish up nicely. We're using pretty small pieces of wood, around the size of a pen blank after it's been narrowed to a half-inch or...
Thanks for this - I guess I need to lay off the Ebony at least for a bit, until I have some better protective gear to keep it off my skin, and maybe altogether. And thanks for the links, too - looks...
Just wondering about this - I've been working with ebony and bocote for a little while, but a few days ago when I was done playing, I suddenly developed the itchies from hell. I've had major itchy...
Clamps galore...for every clamp I own, I seem to find a job that I can't do with any of them. There's always room for more clamps!
And free clamps? Well, it doesn't get much better than that,...
Honestly, that's what I'd love to do - have a proper shop and all, with everything I'd need to make a proper job of it. But for the time being, we're having to make do with our little apartment, and...
I knew it wasn't the fault of the finish; I just wanted to find out if there was any way to proceed without a spray, as we firstly don't have room for it, and secondly, the pieces we're coating are...
Hrm. That'll teach me to trust these reviews, then; the thrice-blasted thing gave it a good rating for use with a brush, and even the can has a couple of instructions for brushing. No doubting that...
Don't know if anyone's tried this stuff out; we picked up a can of it after reading a review recently, which reckoned it was good for brushing as well as spraying, and gave the mid-hard kind of...
This is a quick question - until recently, I didn't realise that Bocote was an oily wood. The first piece I turned from it was coated over directly with a water-based polyurethane coating, which...
Nothing much to say, except to thank the members who've been posting here about their finishing techniques!
I've been struggling to learn a lot of the basics, getting finishes that just weren't...
Woo...I think I like this site. A little annoying that it didn't show up when I searched the web for "bonding wood to metal", though.
Along with trying to work out how to get the skew chisel to make nice shapes instead of random spirals I hadn't planned on, I'm trying to find an effective way to bond metal wire or pins into...
Yeah, I worried about this with my own mini-lathe, too - I'm running a Wilton mini-lathe, and I first noticed it was getting really hot during the worst of the hot spell. Cleaning out the belt drive...
