I just upgraded my grizzly lathe to a vfd.
I bought a 2hp 3 phase 230v motor for $300 and bought a 5hp vfd off of e-bay for 250. the hardest part was making a side shelf for the motor to sit on but...

you could buy a oneway chuck and order the spinle thread insert to mach from their website.
Before I upgraded I used to own a Lathe just like it.
Obviously there is no Morse Taper so you are out of...

That must have been tough to turn with such a giant hole in it .
I really like the form.
I have yet to try a HF with a hole sounds like it would be kind of hard.

I havn't been tuning in a few months and I finally got around to the Project I have been wanting to do ever since I purchased this lathe...

I have the same Lathe and same problem !!!!!
Here is a thought -how about calling Grizzly and seeing if their new Lathe( with the VFD) head stock could be baught to replace the old one and mounted...
