Thanks Matt - I already have the original mag switch that came with my Powermatic - I was looking for one which has the larger paddle.

Thanks Matt - I already have the original mag switch that came with my Powermatic - I was looking for one which has the larger paddle.
I own an older Powermatic 66 with a 5HP motor. Does anyone know of a safety switch for my saw? All of the links show switches rated for 3HP saws.
Steven,
That's good news about the Exaktor. I've bought one and will be installing it when I permanently place the saw in my new shop.

Is it only me or do others want to know the answer to Mike's original question: "The question I have is how to fix the collection looking towards the future"? He asked about a Powermatic 66...
Larry,
I used the Accusquare Fence and Eurojig for years on an older Craftsman tablesaw. I found the Eurojig very useful for exactly the reasons Jim states in his post. I used it for crosscuts and...
Auction is part of MWTCA area P's tool meeting. Friday evening is in-room trading, Saturday pre-auction offers parking lot tailgate sales. Sunday morning at 8:00 is a MWTCA dealer trade show which is...
Juan,
I have a set of these chisels I am willing to part with if you are interested. Check your private messages.

Chris,
I have used all three and see very little difference. My irons, for that reason, are purchased from STW.
1. Stanley #65 LA block plane
2. Starrett 12" Combination Square
3. Lee Valley 3mm Mechanical Pencil
I just bought a couple off Ebay. They are type O-1 steel and are ¼” thick 2” wide and approx 5” long. The bulk of the flattening on the back is done but Steve says the blades need to be sharpened...
Jasper,
If you decide to go the professional sharpening route, Steve at the site below is second to none and his rates are reasonable.

Welcome to the forum.
Here's a handy cross reference from Jim Barker that I dug up years ago on the net covering Stanley, Record, Millers Falls, and Sargent bench planes. It has all the sizes of the standard bench planes...
Now you're thinking Chris! Bob Smalser as a mentor, you couldn't ask for better. My odyessey down the slippery slope began with a woodworking with hand tools course at the local community college....
Chris,
If it was up to me, I'd take Bob Smalser up on his incredible offer. Your journey into handplane madness will be much quicker with a mentor. I think trying to learn to fettle and use hand...
I have a complete shop of power tools (thanks Norm!) but find I am using them less and less. I am much more apt to pick up a hand saw for a cross cut than flip the switch on my table saw these days...
I know you'll get contrary advice but if it was me, I send it to Cooke's and have it sharpened. They can be found at www.cookessharpening.com. They are reasonably priced and do great work on hand...
Fine Woodworking magazine has a review on the Adria saw in their current issue. They agree its a great tool.
It always pays to read the fine print. :( Steve is an outside vendor so you are correct, Aaron, the $50 discount will not apply. Steve's own discount, however will. :D I wasn't thinking of the...
Now is the time to act. It is Knight Toolworks 5th anniversary and Steve has a special offer going. I copied this off the Old Tools Forum:
"I will have a anniversary set of planes. not sure what...
Dave,
I agree, there is no reason to be dogmatic about sharpening, whatever works for you is great. As to the 3000, when I took the "Woodworking with Handtools" class at Cerritos College the water...
Tim,
I use a 800, 1200, (the infamous) 3000 yellow, and a 6000 waterstone to finish up. All were purchased from Japan Woodworker and were in total probably far less cost than a single Shapton...
I agree with Alan - 120 grit drywall screen is the way to go - cheap and effective. I also agree that you should try eBay for a better combination square, besides Starrett you may also want to search...
Dear Zahid,
Welcome to the slippery slope. You are exactly right about learning to sharpen, it is the most important woodworking skill you need. I am somewhat confused by your post as a hard...
Dear Michael,
I tend to agree with your comments about lapping as they apply to a #7. The plane is commonly used as a jointer so a completely flat sole is unwarranted to say nothing of the...
Dear Brian,
Unless you are starting with rough stock from a lumber mill I would think that the scrub plane is an unnecessary luxury for a newbie. Most of us buy our boards only slightly thicker...
