I've been to Rob's handtool class, and on chisel backs we worked our way up the first time around, something like 1000, 8000 then 16000. He does have a video on doing chisels for the first time.

This is my 3rd attempt at a workshop that's disability friendly/accessible....it's an old horse barn, now has a raised wood floor and the machine room is separated from the hand tool...

363432The handtool section of my shop is around 22' x 15' but keep in mind, it has wheelchair access all around the bench. I could get by with a much smaller area if I ditched the wheelchair ;-)...

Will make a great bench, but dit not know it was 50 deg in OH....

my lesson learned, when you know how you should fix a problem, go ahead and fix it, it pays in the long run.

Glad you could help them out and save a wonderful bench.....I would put it into use, and flatten if required, to me that honors the original owner.

You could have just had a bad iron? Had one on a #5, could shave hair then it would not cut after a few strokes, assumed it was not tempered correctly or someone messed with it at sometime.
