Color is powdered pigment in the epoxy (Total boat epoxy). Nothing special to get the recessed look except not fill to the top. Center wood is basswood.

I obtained my set of Koyamaichi oire nomi from Tools from Japan several years ago. Now they are pretty much not in business anymore, from where are people obtaining their Japanese chisels? I need a...
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I found some interesting options on Etsy. Looking for a knife to help me mark for some kumiko projects.
Looking for vendor/maker recommendations for a right handed/single bevel kiradashi marking knife. Thank you.
Thanks Phil. You've identified the tail vise "channel" for lack of a better term. I've attached another picture that will help make sense. The wooden block with the wooden dog in it that is...
Shooting plane score :).
It took the better part of 6 years, but I just finished my ash Benchcrafted split top Roubo. Countless mistakes and learning experiences spread between long periods of idle tools in the workshop,...

Hi Jeff. Both are Koyamaichi. The oire-nomi is 36mm is a boxwood handle. It rounds-out round out my existing collection (probably a bit of a luxury). The paring chisel is 18mm.
Just finished with the doghole strip. The build has taken so long its now more about the journey and less about the destination, LOL. Learning a lot along the way.
Can't wait to get home to hone them. Thanks Stu!

I would like to separate my workshop from the rest of my basement using heavy vinyl curtain. Any recommendations on suppliers for such curtains that are on the economical side. My online research...
Finished truing up the tenon and routed the channel for the tail vise in the front slab of my Benchcrafted roubo build. Slow going, but no major mistakes yet (there are a few blemishes in the photo,...
I have a pair of speakers run from the home theater receiver being fed by a network streaming device (Squeezebox) for content. Lately though, I've been using a Ultimate Ears MegaBoom bluetooth...
Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I will be using a Domino for registration purposes, so slippery surfaces with epoxy wouldn't be a problem.
I'm gearing-up to laminate the ash slabs for my spilt-top Roubo. Is their a standard glue used for this process? One of the extend products from Titebond? I'd prefer the glue lines to be as...
Patrick,
That's Gillian Welch (and David Rawlings). Here's a live vid recording. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NPEj63d0jY They are absolutely brilliant, my faves when it comes to...
Indeed, I've filled-up the recycling bin slicing perfectly good 20 lb laser printer paper with the sharpened chisels. They push through the paper with minimal force and cut cleanly.
Yea surface left behind is glossy/waxy. I think I'm there.
Just finished flattening/sharpening/honing some new Koyamaichi oire nomi at 30 degrees (Shapton 1k ->5k -> 8k -> green compound on leather strop). Took one of the chisels to some Borg pine and made...
Thanks much for the feedback. Both Toyu Hands stores near Tokyo Station were a bust. Pretty much nothing of note in either store. Their offerings at these stores must've changed from previous...
Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I'l be getting to know the Shinkansen well on this extremely short notice work trip. There is a Tokyu Hands located next to Tokyo Station, so I should be able to...
I have a last minute trip to Tokyo scheduled in the near future, and I have the morning free before my return flight. Can anyone in the know recommend woodworking tool establishment in Tokyo that...
Just set the hoops on some new Koyamaichi chisels a few days ago. Pounded the gummi handles with a hammer to get the hoops on about 1/16", tapped hoops on tight with wood end of the LV chisel iron...
