I air dried some 2" slabs and they went everywhere. So I cut them up on the bandsaw into pen blanks and it works great. Nice looking burl. Only issue is the round holes in the burl eyes but that is...

Are there any clubs in the Monterey, CA area?
thanks,
Karl
I just started turning pens a few months ago. I really like the Veretex, bolt action, any long woods, and slim lines. Slims are my main one now since I have too many people I like to give pens to....
Very nice, I haven't done a bowl yet, just pens, but I think that would be perfect design for me to start with. Thanks for sharing.

Thats a huge lathe if it can take a "12 foot tool rest" :). Maybe it's a typo in the ad. Some day I hope to upgrade as well and that looks like a nice one.
What ever you do don't look at the 10 day forecast for my area: http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Monterey+CA+93940:4:USIt is warmer now than summer time. We usually get fog and misty fog for the...
It doesn't matter. I have re sawed lots of walnut like that and pieces with more figure. Sanding off the bandsaw marks is the hardest part. Sharp blade, push stick, and a steady hand will get it...
Hans, I don't know if I am ready for veneer yet. I guess I just like the solid boards. Also solid boards are a lot easier to sand out all my "oh crud darn chisel" mistakes.
Kent, thanks I sent...
Guy, I will look into the hand wheel more. It sound like a good idea. I might be able to make a simple wood box protective cover for the head stock. Thanks again for the manual. The Delta machine...
Dennis, thanks for the parts breakout. Hopefully I won't need new parts. Hopefully the Santa Cruz ocean air hasn't done to much damage to the unit. My buddy did have it in a more or less sealed...
Hans, darn fine piece. I showed the wife that one cause we need a new chest for the foot of the bed. Your book match with figure is exceptional. I have always been a sucker for figured wood. Now if I...
I recently traded my friend some wood for his old 46-525 lathe(basically got it free since it was wood from logs I milled up and left over alder). He told me the lathe came from his old high school...
Very nice table. I have been looking at doing that with my live edge orchard walnut. I wonder if I would get a good contrast with maple and walnut.

Bryan nice slab. I think you are right about the kiln drying making it crack. I have really wondered about drying too quickly. Some walnut slabs I had seen last week that were 3" thick were...
The bark and wood looks similar to a Pecan I just milled up. Are there Pecan trees in that area? When milling it had a squished stink bug smell mixed with a pepper like smell. But there was no...
I second the drum sander. I have a bunch of small figured walnut and the planer chunks the grain. The sander takes longer to get down to size but thats were a nice resaw on the bansaw helps.
To all, thank you in advance for taking the time to help me. I am building a baby crib for my daughter that is due in early July. My in laws are very vocal about there not being plywood in the...
