Yes, it has put a damper on my turning. I need to do some shop upgrades this year, new siding and insulation, as well as windows.
I tried to do some today....just could not handle the cold.
Well, I have to find some good fresh wood big enough to test it out.
I did a 13" bowl core the weekend before.
The core turned out nice and the Nova never slowed down!
I need to work on my finish...
Here are 2 scoops I made this weekend on the new Nova DVR2024 lathe.
Yes you can use them for the raisins....but I would bet they are not much good for all the snow.....
One is Maple, the other...
I have been asked to may these as well.
I had to look them up!
Awesome!
I just "acquired" a Nova as well!
I feel everyone's pain!
This little apple form was destined to go in the barbecue pit.175836
Coring is cool! I bought my Mcnaughton early last year and cored about 10 blanks of various sizes with an average of 3 bowls per blank.
Some of the smaller bowls ended up as jam chucks for the...
That is the way to do it and you never have to worry about explaining why you need a lathe with more capacity!
I have made my own "Ellsworth" style tools prior to learning the process of hollowing.
I got a lot of catches with the bent tools due to my inexperience of using.
Now I am a little more experienced...
I thought a 1642 would be my last lathe as well.....
I am thinking about a dedicated bowl lathe in the future.
Or another 1642, being that the GF turns as well.
They are really nice machines,...
Hmm, they don't serve micro brew at art shows? a tragedy....
I usually start between 200-300 rpm when doing most bowls, sometimes a bit lower if it is a bit out of balance.
I then speed up to maybe 600-700 depending on the size of the blank.
There is a...
I love saved wood!
Great Job!
I use one on all my goblets.
It will cut end grain like a dream.
I have modified mine a bit with a longer thicker shaft and a longer handle for deeper hollowing.
Holding it at the correct angle...
Thanks!
I will put the new McNaughton to good use!
By the way, we have a lot of "feral" guard cats around, you may get rubbed on...lol
I have sealed up the logs I am going to cut this week....
A neighbor recently took down a very large maple.
Luckily, he knows Cheri and I do woodturning and asked us if we wanted some.
The main trunk is almost 4ft in diameter!
Lots of good wood, but...
If it has ring or wind shake leave it or cut it for firewood.
Cheri nearly had her head taken of by some box elder with ring shake.
Just my 2 cents
HF has a special on their 2.5 CFM Vacuum Pump.
Has anyone used this to build a vacuum Chuck?
I do have macro on the camera and I thought that is how I was setting it.
I think it may be time for a new camera....
OR just learn to use this one properly, LOL
Hello everyone,
This is the third goblet from the ash blanks I prepared a couple of weeks ago.
All in prep for some larger blanks for a friend.
The smaller blanks are about 7.5"x3"
The larger...
I live about an hour north of Indy as well and I find ambrosia maple everywhere.
A lot of the silver maple that comes down in storms have the markings.
By the way, I am going thru the one and only...
Your very welcome on the tutorial.
I pieced a lot of turners knowledge together to end up with the way I do it.
I read Mike Cripps book first, then Raffan, then O'Donnell.....the list goes on.
Rj...
Thanks All!
For Donnie:
I dont find them hard to do as I have been turning them for a few years.
Probably the most difficult areas for me are getting the cup hollowed and smooth on the inside, and...
I need to learn to take a better picture! LOL
