If you want a solid wood top, but don't want to spend time building one up, look at glulam beams. I went with two 3.5"x12"x96" for a split top bench, but you can get thicker wider and longer to fit...

Found one on TFWW, not as cheap but probably worth it.

I bought the one from LV and haven't had any issues with it.

Whatever it is, there is no cure. I started with a couple of saws, then aquired my first "nice" old saw and 32 saws later... I'm selling one of them and I feel like I'm selling my kidney.

I made my base out pine and did not finish it, mainly because I'm lazy and cheap. I'd rather apply finish to something I'm not beating on. :)

That's fantastic. My 7 year old son's eagerness to learn/build is already outpacing my skills. Keeps me honest and pushes me to do more. Just hope his interest stays as he gets older.
